I've always done my own pad/shoe replacement, have been doing so since 1960. I bought my TRD new in 1998, put 52k miles on it, not a single problem. Still in perfect condition. Although the brakes are not squeaking (yet), 52K miles and almost 11 years are a lot for brakes (I think), so I thought I'd just be proactive and do the brakes before the cold weather sets in this year. I'm also going on 65 and it would be nice if this [last] brake job outlived me - I probably won't feel like doing a brake job when I'm 75, if I last that long.
Don't know the condition of the rotors, but my brake pedal doesn't pulsate and the vehicle does not pull to either side when the brakes are applied either lightly or heavily, so I think the rotors are okay. About resealing the calipers - thought I'd do that rather than wait a few more years until they leak/bind and then have to pay somebody $$$ to do it for me. Besides, I'll be replacing the rear brake shoes and rebuilding the wheel cylinders in a week or so, and after 11 years the brake fluid is black black black so I'll be replacing that as well.
Glad I don't have to repack wheel bearings!
Also am concerned about the use of ceramic pads with the composite my truck has. Bought some at Checker Auto but I'll be taking them back and using Toyota OEM pads instead.
