I've installed a remote starter/alarm in my HDJ81, but the remote start does not keep the engine running, nor will it actually start it. The error code indicates that the engine is running (when it is not). I'm looking over the wiring diagrams again and think it may have something to do with the ignition wire. My starter only has one ignition connection. However the wiring diagram for my HDJ81 indicates an IGN1 (black/yellow) and IGN2 (black/green). Do I need to connect to both IGN1 and IGN2?

Hi Dave,
where did you buy the commandstart?
lhad vision's installed command start on two 81's work good.
The ig1 or ig2 is to power whatever accessories you want on,e.g ig1 may be for the heater fan and rear defog and ig2 for the radio,l wouldn't hookup ig2 if it is for the radio.
The other thing about diesel commandstart is the ignition sense wire, make sure your unit can sense the battery voltage or tach signal.
if it is not cranking the engine, the start wire may be connected wrong.
let me knoe if you need help,my friend is an installer at vision.

I need to crawl under the dash to determine which IG wire I used. When I shut off the key, it is supposed to keep running while I exit the truck (reservation mode). But, in my case, the engine shuts off, but accessories, etc keep going. When I exit and shut the door, I hear a click and all shuts off. When I try to remote start, I get an error that the engine is running.

The fact that I can start the truck with the key would indicate to me that the starter wire is correct. I'm just thinking that I have the wrong IG wire, or that I need to somehow connect both. I'll try to check this week. I'd appreciate if you could ask your Visions friend which IG wire he used on your 81s.

Thanks

If you have a test light, the easy way is to just find a wire that does not light up the test light, turn the ignition over to start, if the light lights up, you found the wire. Re-verify by jumping it, with the main power wire to hear starter crank.

Still having difficulties here. Right now I've got the alarm/starter hooked to IG2 and the engine will continue running when I remove the key (for reservation mode). But when I try to remote start, there are just clicks. I measure 12v at the starter output after one of these clicks, but the starter does not cycle. If I put the key in the ignition and turn it to "on" when the remote starter is cycling, the engine will start. So, I'm thinking that I still need to power IG1 to get the starter to be enabled. Or maybe it's the 12/24v switchover that isn't engaging. I'll have to wire a relay to engage the second IG wire so they remain isolated. I don't think I can simply connect the output wire from the remote starter to both IG1 and IG2.

Someone with a remote starter in an HDJ81, I'd appreciate if you could look to see how the 2 IG wires are hooked up.

Looking at the EWD, I see the following:
IG1 (black with yellow stripe):
  • terminal #2 12/24v switchover timer
  • glow indicator
  • asdasd

IG2 (black with green stripe):
  • fuel cut solenoid
  • terminal #4 of preheater timer

Okay, remote starter works as expected after hooking up the second ignition wire with a relay. My starter runs for about 5 seconds though. But I'll track down that gremlin later.

Any progress with this buddy? Looking into get a remote start onto my HDJ81 myself and could use all the advice i can get.

Cheers

Well, I'm not sure what specific questions you have, but my alarm/starter is working fine except for the starter engaging for about 4 seconds when it remote starts. I never use it anyway as the diesel doesn't warm up much at all idling in the cold.

I'll try to answer whatever specific questions you may have.

Thank you, much appreciated.

Well I'm terribly worried about my starter going considering it's not the most reliable unit out there as is, so I don't know how having it run for 4 seconds straight would affect it long run. Sounds like it might be easier for me to bypass the starter altogether and just get an alarm installed.

I work for Best Buy myself and get an amazing discount on installations. Would you even remotely consider letting one of the installers in-store do the install for me, or is this something you'd recommend doing yourself?

What type of remote starter did you get installed?

Yeah, running the starter for 4 seconds doesn't work for me either. I just don't bother remote starting it. I bought the starter/alarm for the alarm functionality and remote door locking/unlocking. I may try to figure it out once the warm weather returns, but it is not a big priority.

Personally, I would not allow big chain electronics store installers to work on my vehicles. But if you work for one, I'm sure you can make sure they do a good job. It would certainly be easier. I found it to be a fair bit of work in an awkward location to do the install.

My alarm/starter is made by EasyCar.

I start my truck about 10 min before I leave work in the winter (it's about that time!), and for the remote locking/unlocking, and turbo timer functions. If the truck has sat out in the cold for any amount of time, I'd rather be there to make sure it starts properly and the starter doesn't stick or anything silly like that.

Just a word of warning: if you ever get your circulating greater installed, you cannot start your truck while it is plugged in. There is a warning to this effect in the installation manual. This is another reason I don't use the remote start hardly at all.

Good to know, I'm planning on banging that out this weekend! So one or the other, but not both, lol.

I find that if it's cold enough to plug in, it will be warmer with the circulating heater than it would be running it for 10 minutes.

Ya, it doesn't seem to warm up much at idle, especially if it's cold outside. Coolant heater is the tool for the job.

Funny enough, I actually got this done this weekend.

Idling in my corolla sadly warms it up more in 10 minutes than the cruiser. Hence the heater.

Winter weeks like this that make me hate living in Canada lol

YOu mentioned looking at the EWD, is this one for diesel LC? If so would you happen to have a copy? Been trying to track one down for my '95 HDJ81
