OK.....here goes:

Since I live in the middle of nowhere (basically) I had to do some driving to get to an authorized CompuStar reseller/installer. I ended up about 90 minutes away at a place called Safe & Sound in Chicopee, MA. David set me up with the parts and appointment, and Kevin did the install. It's a small shop, but they've been in the business for over 30 years, and Kevin has been an installer for something like 17 years.

This is the unit I went with... My main criteria was a SMALL key fob (I hate large, bulky clumps of keys) and it had to be a 2-way system so that I'd know for SURE that the truck actually started when I pushed the button. Range wasn't that important since I usually am less than 100 feet away when I need to truck to start/warm up... this system does up to 2500 feet which is already excessive. For guys that want to go farther than that, there are more expensive CompuStar models that will do it.

I told Kevin that I was going to post up the whole story about the remote start on IH8MUD and he offered to snap a few photos of the installation so that I'd have a more complete story. Pretty cool of him to offer, and it proved to me that he had nothing to hide with his work.

The majority of time was spend under the steering column to access the fuseblock and wiring harnesses there:

Here is the brain for the CompuStar:

One nice thing about the install is that Kevin was able to access all the door locking wires from the passenger side dash area, and didn't have to pull the door panels. I've done a TON of DynaMat work in the front doors, and didn't want to have anyone cutting it or disturbing it to get to connectors, etc. So knowing that the install was less intrusive was a huge plus.

Here was another nice touch. Almost all of the wiring was done by carefully cutting the factory insulation and gently sliding it out of the way so the new wires could be wrapped and soldered in place. There was virtually NO cutting of wires, so the integrity of the factory harness remains intact. In fact, if I ever wanted to remove this system it would be VERY easy to prune the wires off the harness and rewrap it with insulating tape! :D

The remote starters all need some way to receive a strong signal from the key fob, so a small antenna needs to be mounted in a spot that is free from windshield coatings. Kevin tucked it up nice and high above the rearview mirror. From the driver's seat it's just about invisible.

....and from OUTSIDE the vehicle it actually IS invisible!!

You get two fobs with the system. The silver button is the 2-way version, and the black button is just a cheap 1-way version. Here's a photo of the 2-way on my keyring to give you a sense of size and scale:

For anyone in the Western NH / Massachusetts area that wants to get a system like this installed, here's a copy of the invoice so you can see the breakout of pricing as well as the phone number for the shop.

They did a nice job... it took about 4 hours total, which gave me plenty of time to just relax in their showroom and to get a nice Italian lunch a couple of blocks away. :)

I was out-the-door for $445.93

I made a quick "demo" video this morning for those that want to see how it actually works.... hope you like it! I did it in one-take with no editing, because I'm lazy and this update has already taken up WAY too much of my time this morning!!!

Thanks....I wish I was close and I would go get it from them.

I have a shop wanting me to install the Clifford 5806x. It is a whole alarm but they will not install the big siren.

So... Toyota key won't unlock the car anymore? Or it just won't unlock the car if it has been remote started? Also, I use "auto" for my headlights. Pressing the lock button twice is how I normally turn em off after exiting the vehicle. If the Toyota key no longer locks/unlocks the car, how do I get this function to work?

Wish it just started/stopped the engine and then my standard key did the rest...

When you get in to drive after remotely starting it, do you have to turn it off and then back on with the key or do you just turn the key to the "ON" position and drive off?

Think of it this way: The new key fob is the "key" that the Toyota sees whe it starts the engine....which means that it is the only one it will accept commands from for other functions (lock / unlock) while the engine is still running. Only one transponder key can be active at a time. If you shut down the engine with the fob, the regular key will work just like normal again.... You can lock or unlock (or panic) just like you always did.

The ONLY time that your standard key functions change is if you have remote started the truck from the fob.

I was afraid of this too... Actually it works perfectly. Just jump in, insert the key and turn to the "RUN" position to unlock the mechanical steering column lock, put the truck in gear and GO!

When you press the brake pedal (just before putting the truck in gear) the CompuStar transfers control of the ignition back to the ignition key itself. This is how it maintains vehicle security as well. If someone was to get inside the truck without the key while the truck was running and tried to put it into gear, the CompuStar would read the position of the ignition switch (which would be "OFF" instead of "RUN") and would put the truck into that mode. The engine would immediately shut off.

It all sounds a bit complicated, but it's really not hard to use.

There are quite a few programmable options for pulsing the door locks at different times, and you can set the runtime for either 15/25 or 45 minutes before it shuts down. Of course you can get fancier if you want and add thermistors to sense interior temperature to activate seat heaters, mirror defrosters or rear window defrosters... A good installer will know which wires to tap into to access all that kind of stuff. :)

Greg, that's a great writeup. $450 seems like a chunk right now... 'cause I live in Atlanta, and it's 48 degrees out. I wonder how that'll change in two months when it's 25 degrees in the am... Or, August when it's 98 degrees.
The Compustar system does seem like the right system though. Thanks for the pics, video, writeup...

Yeah...$450 isn't cheap but it's all relative.

I drove a Mercedes E55 AMG for the last 4 years and that car ate me alive on maintenance and repairs. Now that I'm driving the LCA I never have to spend anything on repairs (until I want to!) so occasionally I spoil myself with little upgrades like this. :)

One other feature that I really like about the remote start is that when the truck is running and it's time to get in, the "unlock" function on the fob actually unlocks all 4 doors, not JUST the driver's door. With the Toyota key you press once to unlock the driver's door... then you press and hold a second longer period of time to get all 4 doors to unlock. Since I'm trying to get my little boy loaded up for school, I need access to the back doors as much as my own each morning... so it's a subtle change that I actually appreciate a lot.

@GregLCA thanks for the great writeup. I am in CT and don't mind driving over 1hr for a good install. Looks like a great system and a good shop. I'll never go without a remote starter up here.

digging up an old thread and wondering if any of you have any experience with this model of Compustar. I've been wanting a remote start on both my GX and my wife's 100 as in Texas summers it's VERY helpful to get the car cooled down before loading kids/us in. BUT i have always hated the idea of adding a big rectangular fob in addition to the already oversized key (i like small/organized keys - OCD). after reading this thread last night i did some AMZN browsing and ran across this one and i think i can live with this 'fob' that is simplistic in form and smaller than the head of our Toyota/Lexus keys.

Those don't look any smaller than the one I've got....??

Just make sure you get a 2-way remote. You want the remote to confirm that your truck actually started... It runs quietly enough that you won't be able to tell most of the time

Reviving an old thread, because it’s below 20° here in Massachusetts and auto start is now top of mind for my 2006!

Thanks for the details on this thread, as I’ve been looking at the compustar. Another thread indicated that when you get in the car and turn the key the steering wheel does not return to previous location when remote started like it does when you get in the car from scratch using the factory key.

Can anyone confirm the newer compustar do move the steering wheel back to their position when you insert the key and step on the pedal?
