Anyone know of a good source for a remote key (the fat key with the lock/unlock/panic buttons)? My Toyota dealer wants $250 for the key plus another $100ish in labor to program it. I can get a bargain deal of only $100 bucks for a valet key...

And assuming I find a blank key, how do you program them?

I FOUND THIS ON THIS SITE: IT'S BY BIG BERT<<<< THANKS...

Programming instructions for Remote Key Buttons
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Several folks have been looking for the programming instructions to add keyless remotes to their LC...This works for 98-03 as far as I know.

These instructions have been tested and worked when I added a new keyless remote for my LC 2000 (I have limited mechanical ability and it was relatively easy)

You must have a working master key ..If your adding a new remote key you should have the key cut and program the transponder for the key, the correct instructions are listed in several spots already...you must be able to start the car with the key...

TO PROGRAM THE LOCK/UNLOCK /PANIC BUTTONS:

1.) Turn Key off..remove key from switch and open drivers door.

2.) Insert key into ignition switch and remove

3.) Lock & unlock power door locks from drivers door switch 5 times @ 1 second intervals.

4.) close & open drivers door

5.) Lock & unlock power door locks from drivers door switch 5 times @ 1 second intervals

6.) Insert Key into ignition switch and turn from lock to on twice and remove key

7.) Door Locks will cycle automatically from lock to unlock twice to confirm program mode has been entered.

8.) Take the first remote, press & hold for 1.5 seconds the unlock and lock buttons simultaniously... and release...then press the lock button for one second and release...If successful the system will cycle the locks from lock to unlock...

Important-You need to repeat step 8 for each remote you want programmed..when all your remotes are programmed moved to step 9

9.) Insert ignition key and remove to exit programming mode..

It is really very easy if you follow the steps careful and takes less than 5 minutes.

My only advice is pay attention to the time intervals and don't rush...

Hope it helps....why pay the dealer $80 ?

i got one on ebay and im to lazy to do the 900 steps to program it . toyota cut it for free i wonder how much to program it.

make friends with a tech and they'll do it for free, just give'em a tener after and they're happy...at least thats what works for me.

Really? It took me 5 minutes to program two new keys, one just a transponder and one full remote. The dealer will charge you labor and unless they have a half hour rate, you're looking at $80-100.

Bring it over I'll do it for you.

Diverging off tech, but my friend trains new Toyota techs. One of their favorite pranks is to see what you can get guys to do while you're rattling off the list of instructions to them programming a key.

"press the brake"
"put both hands on the ceiling"

Stuff like that.

So ... I followed the directions below... everything worked fine up until the point where I test the remote after I completed all the steps.
The remote still doesn't lock/unlock/panic when I try to use the buttons.

Oh wise folk of this forum... is there anything I missed? Did the Texas 2 step, rubbing my tummy and patting my head while doing it.;)

I bought a case with uncut blade for about $10 from a guy out of Hong Kong on ebay. I then bought a use, cut key for about $20, also on ebay. Took it to the local dealer and they cut it for free. I programmed it using instructions that I found online, looks like the ones posted above. Works like a champ. Liked it so much, I ordered another case from the guy in Hong Kong. I was a little hesitant to order from Hong Kong but it turned out great. I only with I could get my Porsche key programmed as easily. All the best. Phil

I followed the instructions and the key works as far as starting the engine and manually locking/unlocking, however the buttons on the key do NOTHING. I guess I can look at it as a luxury to have the remote buttons.............not. What am I doing wrong?

LJLC had a great idea (IMO) if you can find a used key. I looked for one on e-bay and couldn't find a used key. But I do have the guts of a key from my totaled 2000 if anyone is interested. The battery is gone, but with a new batt would work fine.

Now that I think of it maybe someone here has the guts to an 03-06 key they don't want...

Tip..

Open the original key and provide the seller of a new key the info of the internals...

I bought a key, couldn't get it to work, e-mailed the seller, got a response that I had a "weird" model (OEM) and sent me a new key with the same internals..

Just go to a good locksmith and they can do it for you.

My locksmith in Anchorage can make the keys with the transponder chip and/or with the remote keyless entry while you wait. They use ilco brand blanks and you do not need to have a master key. It is not expensive.

The only question I'd have is they say "shell". I might clarify that the thing includes the electronic guts. Most other listings on Ebay that are the shell don't have the internals, but they also don't have the buttons.

It does include the electronics per the description. I've also purchased just the shell which includes a key blank and plastic cover for the electronics. If the remote portion works but the key or shell is damaged this is the way to go as it's only $8.00. One small screw to swap the electronics to a newer, most often slightly used, case with key blank.

New '03 owner here:steer:. The OP says this works for 2003 LC, but I've read (on this forum) that the key has to be programmed by the dealer for 2003 and newer. Can anyone confirm? I have 2 uncut transponder-only (no remote lock/unlock/panic) keys ordered from ebay on the way and need to know if I can avoid the $100 dealer bill to program them.
