Hey All,

I'm about to order some new brakes and rotors for the rig and I can't decide if I should go with regular rotors or drilled and slotted rotors for $30.00 more.

What i'm really wondering, is if drilled and slotted rotors are recommended for overland rigs because of possible small rocks and debris getting into the holes/grooves.. or if that's a no issue.

Obviously this isn't a sports car, but with bigger tires, more gear, the slotted/drilled rotors could be an advantage.. and for safety reasons.

Thoughts?

Most will say stick with OEM, hard to beat but easy and more often than not more expensive to get worse braking..

But if you want something different I then slotted work really well. Stay away from drilled for anything off-road

I've had both. I'd recommend either. I have not noticed a discernible difference between them on this vehicle.

Wow, you guys have almost IDENTICAL avatars... thought the same person posted twice lol.

But anyways, yes what i'm trying to understand is if slotted/drilled is not recommended for off-road use.

I've never had a problem with slotted/drilled offroad. However, I've never really noticed a performance improvement either.

Wow, avatars are really similar.

I ran drilled in on my 05 TJ before seeing the light. Multiple rocks and constantly cleaning mud out of the holes.

Run slotted DBAs now. I felt a difference but maybe because I was replacing the tired brakes when I first bought it. Next time I do rotors I'll prob do OEM, like 50 bucks from Camelback Toyota

I've been using BrakeMotive brakes on pretty much all my cars, and they've been fantastic. Never had an issue with them and night/day difference stopping power-wise.

Also, can't beat the price.

EBC Slotted & Dimpled rotors..
EBC HD brake pads..
Not that race brake you’d expect from a sports car, but better than OE (brake length distance and dust).

That black coating eventually came off when the pads made contact to the surface, but a good way to minimize or even prevent rust on the rotors -will find out in the years to come. Had it for around 1000 miles now.

Slotted, drilled and other means of breaking up the surface of rotors are all effective, in some way or another, because they increase the surface area of the rotor allowing more efficient dissipation of heat (same reason why vented rotors have replaced solid rotors). Whether or not you will feel any improvement depends on how you drive, but it should help to some degree when it comes to brake fade on long descents. IME, slotted rotors are a little better at wiping and clearing mud and grime than drilled. Regardless of whether they're slotted, drilled or both, make sure they're from a reputable company. Cheap rotors that are literally drilled, after-the-fact, can create stress risers in the metal that could lead to failure.

I went with regular rotors. Thanks for all the insight fellas.
