I just replaced my factory G52 with an R151, but this tranny produces quite a high toned rollover noise (the noise a manual transmission makes in nuetral, most noticeable when not moving). The mechanic who installed the tranny put in regular 75W-90 oil but I'm thinking of going a little thicker and/or possibly overfilling it abit to muffle the noise down. I've also read there are some oil additives, such as Lucas HD oil stabilizer, which can also help. What do you guys think ?

You can try it , but in my experience the only thing that works is sound proofing. Did the gearbox get a bearing kit put in before installation?

No, I did some work to it myself but the bearings looked and felt pretty good so I didn't change any. I bought this from a friend who broke a landcruiser for parts and all it had wrong while working was 3rd gear was a bastard to engage. The selector hub was broken and the keys and springs fell. Amazingly it still went into gear and the gear itself wasnt damaged at all. I don't know if it made the same rollover noise though and my friend doesnt remember cos he had it for a short while (he buys and breaks Toyotas).

redline heavy shock, I run this in a toploader in an old commodore I got, there is red and blue, blue is the lighter of the oils and less cold shift bulk, but they are both like glue and make a really whiny gearbox sound new, just an idea?

The Lucas or the Redline mentioned will quiet it down. Probably won't stop it all, but they certainly work to quieten that. I have used both. Not really an issue for you, but they both make shifting stiff when it's really cold. Never really bothered me as it only lasts for a short time then warms up and shifts fine. They will also help out with worn synchros. Cushions the engagement some as they catch up to the gear.

Great! I'll buy some Lucas tomorrow then. Cos I just looked up the redline stuff and they don't recommend it for syncro-type transmissions.

If the spec is GL4 90 wt gear oil, Mobil Sythetic Transmission Fluid 50 will quiet it down. I've used it. Really nice stuff. More viscous than the 75w90 oils but meets the spec for 90 weight GL4. Don't use it in the differential.

Back with bad news. Replaced 750ml of the 75W-90 with Lucas HD stabilizer (since it says 25% for trannys) and had no noticeable difference. Might try my luck with changing it all with some good quality 75W-140.
