What is the recommendation for connection to above? I'm not doing any severe wheeling- yet:D- as I'm still stock.

I'm getting these:
Tree trunk protector
Shackles

I'm seeking opinions on the type, size and length of recovery strap, rope or wire.

Thanks

you don't want to use a snatch strap as an extension I would think.

The Outfitting forum has tons of threads on recovery equipment ...

including - Cheap hand winches?

and - Hand Winches

Advanced search in Outfitting will give you all the info you need.

I'd start with getting solid recovery points on your truck and work your way out. All this stuff is not any good if you dont have something stout to attach it to...

First, buy Bill Burke's video "Getting Unstuck". Then, when you have watched this video over and over till you can recite it verbatim, go out with people who have some experience in vehicle recovery. Learn how to use the stuff. Even the most simple recovery can turn ugly.

That being said, aside from a winch, I carry:
HEAVY DOUBLE-FACED GLOVES
60" Highlift
Jack Mate
Lift Mate
Pull-Pal
2'x2' 1/2" plywood for jack base
30ft 3" strap
20ft 3" strap
Tree strap
5 3/4" D-shackles
Snatch block
85ft 3/8" synth winch cable extension
10ft 3/8" chain with hooks
20ft 1" kinetic rope
Heavy packing blankets
Shovel
Axe

That should cover most of your recovery needs...lol

Comealongs are good for tying down motorcycles and snowmobiles or perhaps tying down that new fridge you just bought to your friends pick-up. They have no purpose in vehicle recovery.

As for the Tifor and Master-Pull, have you ever tried one? I wouldnt want to be near one if it lets loose. The Hi-Lift is scary enough.

What's wrong with the Tirfor? I think it's been the industry standard hand winch since it was introduced. I've never used one (I also have rigging to use my Hi-Lift if necessary, so haven't bothered with a true hand winch), but from what I hear, they are as reliable and safe as an electric winch, and quite a bit more versatile, as you are not stuck with one winching position (can winch the truck sideways, backwards, etc.). Also, its not dependant on the vehicle's electrical system (just your own, heh...). I'd be interested to hear other views on the Tirfor as I have been thinking about one for a long time.

Thanks,

Nothing is wrong with it. I just prefer not to be in the middle of that much potential energy. If you have ever had to winch with a Hi-Lift, the Tifor does beat it in that you can winch more than 2ft at a time, however the Hi-Lift is much more versitile tool. It wouldn't make sense to carry both especially when I would only use the Hi-Lift as a last resort.

Kneel- it looks like you get stuck a lot:D :D Thanks for the list and suggestions.

I found a lot of the information I was seeking in Outfitting. NMuzj100- thanks for the re-direct.
