Recommended wheels, want to go with some skinny tires....

I am seeing a wider selection of wheels in the 17 x 9 flavor with -12 offset so that's what i've been shopping.

9 inch width is the upper limit of the Cooper 255/80 R17 tires so i figured it would be ok .... just looking at experience with fitting this tire on this vehicle.

If you're going to air down at all I would go with a narrower wheel. 255 is quite narrow for a 9" wheel (in the context of off road tires).

A 17x8 0mm will fit about the same as a 17x9 -12mm regarding inner clearance.

Has anyone got a picture of the BFG all terrain T/A AT KO2 235/80-17 mounted on the stock wheel? Looks like it should be just a bit taller than stock and according to BFG will fit ok on the 7" rim.

I just mounted these cooper atp in 295/70/17 flavor on 2014 4runner rims. Its a 9 inch rim and looks great IMO:)

Bought the same wheels last year, love those (idea stolen from .....grrrrrrrr...... avatar/name escapes me at the moment). Need to get off my rear and either paint or powder coat mine.

Pics of my "skinnies" - camping last Saturday night.

Resurrecting this one instead of creating a new thread...

I'm just wanting to verify...non-KDSS 03 GX470. Will 255/75/17 inflated fit on the stock spare wheel in the stock location with stock ride height? I keep reading conflicting reports but it seems the overall consensus is yes it will. I'm getting 255/75/17's put on tomorrow and don't want to have to argue or persuade the tire shop any more than necessary.

P.S. as a side question...would going with the stock 265/65/17 spare for a day to get back home mess things up in the event of a flat? That's a full 1.5" difference and I don't know what sensors or air ride would be affected but I'd rather save the money if I can.

255/75/17 will fit with no issue in the stock spare location, fully inflated. I have a GY Duratrac under mine that's a little over 32" and it fits with no rubbing.

As far as the smaller spare, a 1.5" difference seems fairly large but you may be ok for s short while. I would keep an eye on local classifieds for 32" takeoffs from Jeep JK's; they can often be found with little wear and fairly cheap.

Thanks GXMac,

That's exactly what I'm going with is GY Duratracs in 255/75/17 on TRD Trail wheels (brand new off a 2018 4Runner). I'll go ahead and get the 5th tire put on the spare...I'm getting a great deal on them so I can do that and forego the road hazard warranty $25/tire to offset the cost of the spare.

I also have been trying to figure out the tallest tire combo I could get without a body mount chop. I ended up getting 255/80 ST Maxx and picked up some 8 hole FJ wheels. These give about an extra 1" of offset and are 7.5" wide, perfect for a 255. I am going to paint the wheels a custom color...

I went with the Cooper ST Maxx on mine in the 255/80/17 with the 4Runner wheels. I had to drop the air pressure to get the spare to fit, but also carry a compressor with me. I also added the integrated hitch with the tire in place and it came nowhere near touching the tire. A few pics:
