Ok all - sorry for the delay in getting some pics up. Almost finished with rebuilding this carb and wanted to share, probably have some questions as well.

The stock return fuel line is not on my 40 and I would prefer to not add it back unless I absolutely must, I would prefer to just plug it. Jim C. provided a possible solution for this I have yet to try. Here is what I have currently. Desmogged 78 FJ40 with rochester 2bbl.

Here are some of the linkages I have.

And a few shots of the current setup (sorry they are not that great).

No smog pump and fuel inlet only.

I rebuilt the carb after dipping it in Berrymans. Here are a few pics.
A few pics after everything was dipped.

Thanks in advance for any pointers. I think I am missing a piece or 2 of the OEM linkage setup from the pedal, not sure yet...need to pull out the pedal I bought and look at all of the linkages, if anyone has some linkage bits, please let me know.

Hopefully this will help someone in the future. I took lots of pictures and some ****py video as I R&R this as it was my first time rebuilding a carb.

Hopefully I will get it on someday soon :) been traveling a lot.

Brad

Very nice work so far Brad...you are braver than me diving into a carb rebuild. I took the easy route and just sent it to JimC to deal with. I would like to pic your brain one day as I assume I'll have to rebuild/clean mine again eventually and prefer not to drop another small fortune on it.

It looks like you already have most of the linkage pieces and an extra plate that mounts to the base of the cab (I call dibs on one if you'll sell it :p).

I assume you already had a mechanical linkage with the non stock carb or was it cable (I couldn't tell from the pics)?

I will try and take some pics of my setup later today or Saturday for you to use as a reference (2F with stock 77 carb and mechanical linkage).

Thanks Jon - my current setup is Non-OEM pedal with cable.

I have some mechanical linkages, just not sure I have everything. You are welcome to pick my brain anytime and I have a link to a lot more pics if interested.

I can't believe how good that looks. Did Berrymans get it that clean by itself or did you do some scrubbing as well? Where do you get Berryman's anyway??

Keep up the great work man - looks fantastic - keep us posted on how it runs afterwards. I'm about a month away from doing mine so any tips are appreciated.

Got the Berrymans at AutoZone in a gallon bucket. It did indeed do most of the work, some things I had to let soak for overnight, some more...then rinse with water and I used the compressor to blow everything out.

I had to do some wire brushing, but not a lot.

Feel free to call me or come by with any questions 919.656.4682

Just document everything, take a lot of pictures, if the pictures are not clear I videoed and talked to myself describing what I was removing or installing.

I will report back when I get it on, but probably still a few weeks out on that assuming I do not have a hard time finding any missing linkage bits for the gas pedal :D

Brad

If you need small bits for the linkage, Mark at Mark's Offroad in Cali would be the first place I'd check. He seems to keep a pretty good stock of used bits.

I've got a small order coming from him now. Your best bet is to call not PM him...

BTW - I'll have pics posted tonight after I get finished with my man chores...

I stopped by JimC's house when I went to pick up my 80 and he said the same thing, call don't email. If Mark is the same way, they get tons of email for advice, tips, fixes and the such. Jim told me unless the subject is descriptive enough and he knows you, he doesn't even open e-mails...

Hi All - just a quick update. finally found a plug for the return line, some fittings for the fuel in and decided last night to go ahead and try swapping out the $hitty rochester with my rebuild Aisan.

Started about 10:00 stopped at 1:30 this morning, worked another 2 hours this morning.

Fired right up, feels different than the rochester..actually a little slower, well see. Took it up some steep inclines near the house and it is doing great off camber so far. Pretty happy overall.

If it last, next up is selling the 60 series gearbox/pump and working on getting parts for the saginaw conversion.

Here are some pics, a couple of changes since, but basically this is what it looks like.

Happy as hell right now

a good solution to plugging the port on the air filter housing is to drop by wal-mart and pick up a couple of the black rubber "cane tips"...one of the sizes is a perfect fit. It's a rather large rubber cap that goes over the end of a walking cane. Just a thought.

I looked all over for some plugs like that until one day I noticed the end of someone's walking cane and recalled for some reason I had seen those in Wally-world. A couple of those stayed on my 60 until the V-8 arrived.

Hi Elbert - yeah, on my run to the hardware store yesterday to get a more permanent fuel connection setup, I picked up a pack of the 1", they work well.

Brad,

cool, Maybe next year we'll try to get in on a ride in NC/SC area. Hopefully I'll have the $$ to get a trailer by then...if not... U-Haul may work. Can't stand to sit in the 60 for very long drives.

Glad it worked for you.
