After much swearing and subsequent repenting, I broke the plugs free on my front diff. What came out stank like 22 year old differential oil and was the consistency of hot chocolate pudding. There were also little bits of shavings stuck to the drain plug.

Conversations with @Trollhole and @cruiserdan, as well as a thread over in the 80 forum, have led to the decision to overhaul the front diff - or at least replace the internals (I can't remember what Marshall called them).

@Teddy responded to my post and recommended posting up in the clubhouse regarding a HAMOM.

I was already planning on replacing my busted radiator (and the rest of the cooling system) and rebuilding my knuckles, but I think overhauling the front diff is probably over my head.

So that's where I'm at. I'm new to the club and don't know all the protocols yet. Thanks to @Teddy for suggesting the HAMOM post.

Let someone look at your front diff before you start replacing it. They are pretty tough, especially with stock tires on a vehicle that hasn't been wheeled. Then you can know what you have on your hands.

As far as the radiator and associated parts, we could do that in 4-5 hours one day if you can wait a few weeks.

You are in for at least a minimum of a front axle job. Regardless, while you have your axle shafts out, pull the 3rd member (10 nuts) and see what the ring and pinion look like. That is going to be the best way to confirm that nothing is shot or bad.

I can wait. No long trips planned until July. So far a daily dose of green stuff has kept her temps under control.
