I'm pretty sure that my alternator died on me the other night, I slowly lost power over about 10 min until it completely died, then gave me a code 11 "momentary loss of power to ECU". Battery had 11.99-12.00 volts, radio and lights worked but the starter would not move at all. I charged the battery and cranked it up the next day and was not getting any charge at the battery or from the back of the alternator. Taking it to the shop to be tested today. My question is are they worth rebuilding.

The PO said he replaced the alternator at 150k, it now has about 215k miles. After taking the alt out I think it has been rebuilt previously, it is a denso case but the interior is orange.

Are there other options, such as a GM alternator, that would work?

I think before long someone will come on and give the name of a supplier who presently offers a GM Alt. swap. We use to, died from a lack of popularity/customer response. You could use a reman. 100-plus amp GM alt., slightly modify the original alt. mount, then add a custom alum. pulley we use to make to align belt. I may still have some of the alt. pulleys, I believe they align the atl. belt with the rear pully on the crank (closest to engine block. Call if this does anything for you????? (562) 949-9494

Check the vendor section. There was a posting for a vendor that was rebuilding 80 series alternators to increase the output. He said he could do it for 60 series alts too, but you may have to send it to him since he did not have many cores.

What's your time worth? If it just needs new bearings and brushes, then it's only a 1hr job. A bad regulator is even quicker to change out, but can be expensive.

If it is anything more than the above, the alternator is just a core.

I used to utilize my local builder when i lived in another town.

It was half the price and the quality was better than the Advance/Autozone type place.

Well it turned out to me a bad regulator. $65.00 and a couple hours taking it out and putting it back in and I'm back on the road.

This one has definitely been rebuilt before, when it dies completely I am going to upgrade to a higher output alt.

Thanks for the ideas.

I called the local toyota dealership out of curiosity and interestingly the 100amp alt was cheaper than the 80 amp, ~287 vs. ~308.
