Rebuilding a Transfercase

I need to rebuild the split transfercase from a 1986 FJ60 for a H55F swap I plan on doing. I am clueless other than what I have read on MUD. How hard is it? Would I be better served to have a shop do it?
 
Do you have a press and associated tools required?

While I've never done one myself, I think it's like most stuff, as long as you have the tools and are willing to learn then it's all doable.
 
No press. I do have access to one though. I will have to do a tool inventory and see if I lack anything special.
 
It's pretty easy imho. I've done 6 or so split case rebuilds now. I recommend a press and a good pilot bearing puller. Would recommend following the fsm.
 
+1, have done a few, Gathering the right size tools to press the bearings on and off his hardest part. Ball of the manual and keep it clean
 
Split case really is a :banana::banana: job IMO. I've done two and about 3 FJ40 1 piece cases. Split was easy peasy.
 
The perfect excuse to buy any pullers you don't already have, including a top quality slide hammer for the pilot bearing. Follow FSM specs to the letter and, as mentioned, clean the heck out of everything. Don't forget step #6 .... :beer:
 
My Harbor Freight press was cheap and gets used often. Auto Zone loan-a-tool bearing installer if you don't have the sockets large enough for the job.

Soda blasted the housing and washed the halves in Simple Green afterwards. The housing looks new and I like the way the parts turned out but I'll just use a strong degreaser, toilet brush & a hose the next time around.
 
FYI, in rebuilding 2 split cases, I never used a slide hammer for the pilot bearing. I was able to mangle the old cage easy enough to rip it all out with pliers. YMMV.
