I recently acquired a used Kyosan Denki fuel pump thought by the PO to be from a 1968 FJ40 but I think it is a slightly later year since the valves are pressed and set instead of the replaceable ones. This is my first time to rebuild a fuel pump. My rebuild kit came with a new spring that attaches to the actuator arm. The spring on the used pump looks to be in good shape. Should I replace the old spring with the new one that came in the rebuild kit?

If yes, are there tricks or "experienced watch outs" when I punch the pin to release the actuator arm so that I can replace the spring? I am attaching photos so that you know which spring I am referring. Also, please let me know if you spot other things that I need to do before installing the components of the rebuild kit and screwing it all back together. Thanks!

It is a very good video and informative. I watched it before deciding to buy a used pump to rebuild so that I would have a spare available if needed. The video makes no mention of replacing the actuator arm spring; hence, the reason I am asking my question, "Should I replace the spring or is the benefit not worth the trouble?"

Replace it.

I think I remember just compressing spring with a small flat head screw driver to get it out. I know I did not remove the arm. The "nipple" where hooks to the arm is not very big. It os a strong spring wrap a rag around it and protect your eyes.

Thank you! This is the kind of "cheat code" I was hoping someone would know and share.
