Jim C. rebuilt Brett's 2F that is for sale now. He sent me the invoice, to the tune of about $3500 for the rebuild.

The Man-a-fre headgasket we failed shortly after, BTW. They have apparently corrected that problem, though.

For those of you planning to get rebuilds from various sources. I learned the hard way about 2 little things that you need to watch. First: Don't let them thread the little brass oiler on the timing plate too far into the plate. If they do, it protrudes out the back and causes an oil leak. Second: Get the machinist to pull the little galley plug in the head (passenger side over #4 spark plug area). Have him thread the hole and put in a hex head plug.

Yep, a must do, also noticed the 87 has a threaded plug on the back of the block where the earlier 2f's have a driven metal seal (looks like a little freeze plug) I wonder if those failed too.
I think I will epoxy the freeze plug on the back of the head and block too. I lost one of those once. Now there is a hole in the firewall behind the heater.

Where is Danny's (by the post office?)

Who is his machinist or is he a machinist. All I can say is don't pay everything up front and don't pay it all until you are satisfied. Kind of tough to do but that is your only leverage.
Lindvig is a little expensive (Pheonix) but has an excellent reputation. My neighbor had SAT machine do his 2f head and they were reasonable and quick. They resurfaced my flywheel-same results.
I will PM you my info, be more than happy to go with you to check out the results if you want. Kief.

Kief, I did a farm style overhaul on my 2f for around $500.

new bearings, hastings cast iron rings(they make up for about .010 inch of taper in the cylinder walls), Two used pistons from the parts pile, a head gasket from the gasket pile, a ball hone, OE pan gasket one piece design and worth the $18 at the dealer, a valve grind, and resurface the head(most exspensive part).

I did the whole job with the engine still in the rig and she runs great.
I might try it on an engine stand next time but we'll see.

I did this on my 67, 13 years ago as a temporary fix. Honed out rust in the cylinders, new rings, seals etc. Still runs good but compression is weak.
Did this same thing on my ol' 84 that I sold to my buddy. It lost the head gasket and we figured what the heck. I ought to talk him into a compression test just for the fun of it!
This motor is in way worse shape than that one.

Thanks, That doesnt sound too hard. I used to play with motors in my younger days - Not that im that old! Its just that my cars are modern ones now and it scare me even lifting the hood, too many damn things under there nowadays.
But my 2F that more my style, Cheers from Downunder

I would recommended threading that freeze plug also. Had a guy locally have that one pop while driving down the road. The motor is now toast.
