Just bought my dauhter an 89 runner. The thing is uber nice for an 89. Anyway the rear window makes a clunk and jumps at about half way up or down. Is this normal or should I tear into it before it gets stuck? Also if anyone in Denver/ Clorado Springs area has a nice stright axle runner they want to trade for a mostly stock 71 FJ40 I maybe game.

They just do that.. be Lucky that the thing works, lol.... I have an 89 too.. Just got Rear ended though =( i am also in colorado springs

Not sure the exact site, but a guy on pirate4x4 has a writeup for just about any mod or fix on a first gen runner..

not sure about the 89 but my 88 (brobley the same) there is a metal trak along the bottom of the window that can rust away my rear window is all mesed up beacause of that , this weekend im gana break down and fab something up to fix it .

Clunk and jump is not normal. Could be the glass isn't held firmly in the bottom track (like nat88). Could be missing or damaged tooth on the gear. Could be damaged gear on the motor.

It's not hard to take apart, just tricky.

My '89 started the clunk-and-jump deal after I closed the gate too firmly on a bunch of tires I had in the back of the truck. It didn't visibly bend the gate, but somehow, overstuffing the back of the truck caused this to start. I agree it's not normal. I used it for another year before selling and never investigated.
