Been spending a few days of the week and weekends building a new trail with young Matthew...Then this happened on the way in. Had to remove drive shaft and get a flat bed to take it home as it was very unsafe.

Bummer for sure, So what'd you break? With you vast knowledge and interpretive skills, an explanation would
be in order.

The ubolts from Hub City spring have been stretching and never seem to stop. I am replacing all Ubolts, fronts are also now stretch and the axle tends to rock when they get to loose.. In this case I had just torqued them again and went out and had the spring centering pin shear off thus allowing the axle to move back 4 inches on one side..

Some one pointed out my spring mounting pads may be round slightly which will cause this to happen even with new Ubolts. If so I will check and cut them off and put on the longer Ruff Stuff mounts.

I wouldn't put longer spring perches on. I did that on my FJ40 with the SOA, and it kills spring flex.
Hard to believe the u bolts were stretching that much. Now I'm paranoid and will check mine when I get home.
Todd @ Aqualu sold me short and long perches. I might have a set of long ones in the shed.
Could copy them easy, if you can wait.

Awe come on... why couldn't you just shove it forward with the Hi-Lift, and drive he home? :hillbilly:

Worst case lash it in place to stop it from shifting around. It's not lik3e your U-bolts broke.

Heard that over the years.

Must confirm they are rounded..

Tried winching it forward with my buddies truck up against a tree, the OME spring was just about to bend when I called it quitze. We were even going to put straps on it and continue but it was getting worse by the minute.;)

Still need to come down and get the steering component Steve.

From the thread title I thought you had converted a front axle to work out back. I’ve seen it on a couple of 40s. I considered doing it for a while until I weighed the pros & cons. Birfields on all 4 corners was a major con... especially given a healthy 350 and they’d be under load 100% of the time. So much more to fail.

Suddenly a better turning radius doesn’t seem worth it. If the recipe to break a front birf is to reverse while the wheels are turned, driving forward with the wheel turned would likely blow a rear. And teaching my next kid to drive stick would blow another.

Who new a cruiser could lock the rear in a downshift :D at 20ish mph.

Thus I’ll just stick with a disc brake FF rear axle, add P/S, and enjoy almost as quick turnarounds. Besides, four wheel steering could be a bit scary on the highway.

Perhaps with a centered rear diff it could be done without steering knuckles...:hmm:

At one point I also considered Freewheel hubs... but have ruled that out... KISS. At least for now :D It’d be handy if I ever needed to tow it, but I’ve always driven her home since ‘91.

I spent a day in a 100K buggy with rear steer that could turn 60 degrees, its crazy the stuff we did in Texas with this truck along with cutter brakes..

It is a game changer but your right about it being properly built and engineered. His system had a self centering gismo with the the push of a button that made things much easier.

This was the rig i spent a day as passenger, Jim has passed away building trails

Problem solved..... hard to believe 5 years ago I gave HCS my factory ubolt and they made me up a set that were the wrong radius, yes they fit and bolted up easily enough.

This time around I got the new ubolts and within minutes of putting the first ubolt on I noticed how much room between axle tub and ubolt, around 3/8 of an inch.

Nearly impossible to open up a ubolt by hand, Island Spring made them quite a bit to tight, figured out how to spread them using impact and rear axle bolts.

I wiped off the never seize and ground and painted the perches.

Island Spring had 37x10 and 12 swampers, bias ply
