Rear Sliding Window?? (1 Viewer)

I had to take my sliders out and disassemble, clean, and reassemble what was left of them(a large portion of the aluminum track is missing on both sides due to corrosion). After seventeen years of road salt and dirt, I couldn't close either side fully, and the constant wind howling was annoying. A little maintenence and they work great now, even with a large portion of the track gone. Even when i couldn't fully close them they didn't leak. I suppose in 17 more years I'll have to do this again and have to actually buy the corroded parts, but the whole process of removing them is quite easy. I do have to take them out in the next year or so again to paint, and could never imagine not having sliders, I use them alot.

Hi, just wondering what you mean by "garage door mod". I have a 97 lx450 and I would like to put in a HomeLink system in my visor as I like to keep it orderly. Is that what you did? Thanks and have a great night.

What you say makes so much sense...but I'm 19 and practicality is just not on my agenda lol I need my airflow :crybaby:

I'm 21. I drove a non-AC VW bug during a HOT summer. I know your pain.

I NEVER use those windows. The four passenger windows + sunroof give more-than-adequate airflow. Even compared to my buddy's 4Runner with all his windows open.

x2, I thought I would use them more, but I never do (4yrs). The cruiser actaully has really good air flow IMO, couple windows down and sunroof provides plenty of air.

Although nice to have the rear sliding windows, I would'nt call it a deal breaker by any means.

:meh:

I want the non-sliding windows. My sliders don't get enough use to justify keeping them.

I use my cruiser as a daily driver work vehicle, and have the back full of tools, thats why I use them so much. Sometimes its easier to keep the windows open so I can just reach in and grab stuff. But besides that, I really don't ever use them, maybe when I'm road hunting or camping. I would definitly not consider non sliders a deal breaker though, although my dog loves them.

I Don't have sliders and I have had a few warm days here where I wish I did. I do have those big Monsoon window visors which I'm sure cuts down the flow through air quite a bit. Intend removing these soon. Best cure for a hot day in an 80? ..... Wait for it.....

I'm assuming you meant that for me. Click the link in my sig and it will take you right to it.

The sliding windows are definitely cool. I use mine occasionally to get gear out of the truck on a trail run, or to route my air hose (CO2) in a more direct path to tires that need to be filled.

However, you might want to do an A/B comparison to see if the solid windows make the interior of the 80 any quieter. My 80, which is far from stock, keeps getting noisier to drive. If solid glass cut back 5-10 dB of road noise, I'd consider keeping them.

My sliding windows have never leaked, but they really don't get used that often. Opening and closing them is a hassle for 2 reasons: 1) they are physically hard to open, and 2) you have to stop and get out of the vehicle to open them. When I'm driving and want a fresh breeze, rolling down all 4 windows and opening the sunroof provides loads of fresh air. I can do all of this while the vehicle is rolling, and then roll them back up when my wife and kids complain. And I never think: ah, it would be so much better with those back sliders open.

A lack of sliding windows is not a deal killer.

For this problem I was hoping to retro the CRLawrence power slider to work with these. Only problem with that is problem 1 which you say is the amount of force needed to open/close them. If I can get them to slide easier, then I'm sure I can make them powered.

We had both options in Australia, Barn door model had the solids and the Tailgate model had the sliders fitted. Just changed mine to solid from sliders, pity your not closer you could have had them, easy to change over you just need the new seals, these are headed for the bin. :meh:

The leaking problem is NOT one that really gushes water. IIRC, it's more of a seeping down in to the areas below the windows and between the exterior and interior walls. In extreme cases, it can fill the jack compartment up and get the carpet wet back in the 3rd row area. Also causing some rust on inside of exterior wall when left unnoticed or neglected. I believe on later models with the cell phone antenna installed, it was more of a problem. I think if you search on this you can find the info.

Bang on!! The UK (or even the Jap import) versions with sliding rear windows tend to leak bad enough to cause rust problems, also they are easy to forget and leave open when your other windows are connected to the 'auto shut' when setting the alarm, not good in the UK I'm afraid.

If you pass through Texas on your way back to Florida, you're more than welcome to swap those windows with mine if you do the work. lol.

If I do the work?? From what I understand, it's the solid windows that are worth more. Why should I do the work lol :flipoff2:

You live in FL and dont use ac? Madness. I about die in the summer driving with no ac. Yeah someone will most def trade you.

The solid glass rear windows are rare, but I know of a 1995 that has solid windows, no sunroof, cloth interior and lockers. The woman told me they custom ordered it to their specs in late '94. I told her to let me know when she wants to sell it...

I've just done the swap from the fixed/solid windows to the sliding ones. :hillbilly:

Well, that's not exactly true.... I had a friend who runs a bodyshop do the swap for me. :D

I snapped some pics of what's involved, but not all of it! (I had to hold the glass with both hands so it wouldn't fall!)

The sheet metal looked clean, with no sigh of rust, but I'm a bit worried as the (used) sliding windows that I had replaced the fixed ones with had rusty screws and stuff at the bottom. If I can I will see if I can inject some silicone so I can minimize the chance of water getting in there.

This is a mod that I had been wanting for a LONG time because I wanted to have the 3rd-row window screens made. The shop I've been dealing with with the 2nd-row screens wanted a sample 80 with the sliding windows. Anyway, I've made an appointment to have the measurements done this afternoon for them.

Anyway, here are some pics of the windows, including those with the OEM screens.

My kids are excited that they can get better ventilation. ;)

BTW, I decided to keep the factory bars across the window so I can eliminate the chance of my kids falling out of there! :hillbilly:

If you've been contemplating this mod, I would not hesitate in getting it done!

Oh yeah, a small note... the ventilation louvers that I used to have won't fit (Different PN's). So I'll have to look for used ones.

I guess the sliding windows make it "thicker" than the single/fixed windows.

BTW, did the US-spec sliding window (RH) slide both front and back?
On mine only the back one slides forward, I guess because the front would be hard to access with the rear ac duct that came out from the quarter panel, etc...

hey thanks for the shots and the info! Those screens are super cool. You said they make them for the second row windows too? Or did you make them yourself? Anyway, hopefully I'll find a truck here soon I've actually spotted a nice LX in GA that is much closer than the one in NM... problem is it's bone stock (with lockers). I'm not really sure what I should do. I also have to keep in mind how I would explain to my mother me buying a high mileage truck that's scratched and dented all over... in place of my newish 4Runner. The only reasons I am considering the LX is b/c it's very clean, much closer, and still very capable off-road as is. I suppose I can always do my mods later and have it more personalized to me, but the fairly built one is very tempting....
