Hello,
I would like to change my rear shocks sports OME "tired" with other larger shock absorbers but I have a problem in the back (front no problem), the body of the shock passes very close to the leaves of the spring, I would say 3 mm maximum; I would like to mount shock absorbers with larger body of 67 mm, but it is not possible.
Is this normal? Suggestions of those who had the same problem?
I enclose a photo to better explain the situation.

Thank you all.

Hi there. what if you flipped the shocks? Looks like it's the body of the shock getting too close...

Thank you all.

looks not good...

Yes... i have also the impression that the shock is too close to the spring but if I flip it, first thing is that the shock is bigger on the upper part and things get worse and second is not correct cause the mixture gas/nitro is in the lower part and if i reverse the shock in case of little loss i'll loose in a moment all the gas....

At least for Nitro charged shocks like OME Nitrocharger, they can't be installed upside down (I asked). They won't work correctly.

A FJ60/62 shouldn't have monster shocks installed in the rear. Just a mid grade easy riding shock is best. Strong (stiff) high performance shocks can eventually break the flimsy upper shock mount that's tack welded to the cross bar. As a rule of thumb, if a shock is too big to fit easily next to the spring, it's not a good shock to use on a 60.
At least that's my conclusion.

That’s a great point that I never thought of! I was thinking of getting some monster shocks but this gives me pause.

Hi to all,
I’m not completely agree with the equation bigger body= stronger= stiff.
The shock with bigger body is an alternative to the others with separate reservoire, with a boigger body you can have more quantity of mixture gas ecc…. and so minimized the problem of heating during long raid. Moreover, in many absorbers you can find here in Europe with big core, you can fix the valving parameter in function of your leaf spring , the load you “normally” have and the use you made with your 4x4.
I have seen old HJ61 like mine with this solutions and works well on hard situation so I think is a question to adapt a old 1988 Toyota to the new advanced shock absorbers solutions now we can have…..
The same is with the pack of leaf springs that are in many configurations and in my opinin is very important have a correct pairing leaf spring and shocks
Ths is my opinion … and for me is another reason to play with my “baby” ahahahaha
