Our 18 month old was playing with my keys in the kitchen and later in the day I found the rear hatch opened and jammed against our garage door. Luckily no damage; however, I was unable to prove if the hatch has an auto stop feature during the open or close sequence. The mechanism exerted more force than I expected and did not react when I tried to stop it from opening or closing. Granted, I wasn’t being forceful for fear of damaging something but it did leave the question in my mind.

Does it have a safety feature? Does it simply stop when an obstruction is detected or does it change direction? I’m asking because as I mentioned, it was jammed about 75% open against my garage door.

My 2015 LX will stop and reverse the hatch from going up if it encounters an obstacle (like if I were to physically prevent it from going all the way up) but it takes some effort to make it do so.

This was one of the surprises for me when I bought my LC last year as just about every other vehicle I can think of has an adjustable upper limit for the tailgate to account for things like low garage doors. I‘m pretty sure the force pushing it up is just from the struts, so there’s probably nothing in place to automatically reverse it. Closing, OTOH, should definitely have protection from too much resistance as that would be a huge liability issue otherwise.
