Blew my front diff ( see Real Time Help in Moab thread) and am now considering what to do with the rig. Mph was over yesterday and suggested that in addition to a diff rebuild and front locker I also do a rear locker. As I said, I never want to go into areas like Kane Creek Canyon again, but.... It's kinda like the winch- I hoped I'd never have to use it and didn't for a couple of years, but it totally paid for itself in getting me home from Kane Creek Canyon. Not going to regear- 35s are too much for my typical use. Any downside to going fully locked?
So what sayeth the MUD brain trust?

ATRAC and locked....nice!

That Land Cruiser has come a long way since it's days in Victoria, Tx....assuming it is still the same one.
Yup Bloomer- it is from Victoria, Tx- owned by one of the family members of the Blackwood Toyota dealership. No ATRAC though. I did the same thing as you with a Slee makeover including his Blueberry bumper, and (thank God!) a Warn 9.5X winch, all on Christo's recommendation. I totally trust whatever advice Christo and his gang care to share. It certainly has a lot more dents and scratches that it did when it lived in Texas!

Really...no ATRAC? Thought it was an 06?

I've known the Blackwood's for years and use to have all my work done at their dealership, when they still owned it. They've since sold to a mega dealership. Really miss the small company feel of it....most of the employees left as they could not take the transition to and operations of a large dealership.

Yup, I totally trust Slee and his recommendations as well.

I'm not sure what tire size you run but fwiw the 4.88s with 33s feel perfect! But mine is a 2000 so no vvti or 5spd.

I ran 4.88's with 33's for a few weeks before moving to 34's. Around town it was great. However on the hwy, the rpms were a little high for my liking.

My tires measure at 33.2 and it's good on the freeway till around 75-80mph, if I keep it under that it's fine. Most of my longer trips I have a trailer or am loaded down and the extra gearing is nice.

If the op has ever considered gearing, now would be the time to do it! If you are running 33s or above you won't regret it.

I guess my analysis is that for my typical use(Kane Creek Canyon excepted) 33s are good. 35s drop gas mileage and add weight and cause a number of other issues. Also, we drive a lot of highway miles- it takes 3 1/2 hrs to drive from Park City to Moab. I think I'll stick with OEM gear ratios, but thanks for your input.
