So in redoing the suspension I noticed the wheel cylinder is leaking in the drivers side rear. Started looking into it today and am confused as to which part I need. I need the wheel cylinder that is on the drivers side and to the front of the truck (I am not sure if this is considered the upper or lower). How bad of a job will this be to replace the cylinder and the rear shoes. Also found out the drum retainer screw is missing! Any idea where I can find one or does anyone know the thread? Posting here so I dont get flamed too bad in 40 tech. Ive searched but my search skillzzz must be weak.

This is the Upper? Correct?

brake job and replacing the wheel cyl. is no big deal at all..... once you get the cyl. replaced and the new shoes on just adjust the shoes until they are tight against the drum and then back them off a couple of clicks on the cylinders

as for the retaining screw I have never had a cruiser that has had them...... :hillbilly:

Thank you! Is my guess of upper cylinder correct?

Hmmm - there are some pics around here on MUD in some threads that label everything - I just looked at one and it labels the wheel cylinder you speak of as the 'front,' not 'upper' or 'lower.' I have a box of misc brake parts so let me know if you need anything particular.

How was your drivers side rear axle upper (front) wheel cylinder? If you have that one would you sell? I want to have a spare because I have my mind made up to rebuild it and would like to have another incase I mess up.

Not sure - I'll try to check tonight and see what type of shape it is in. One of my driver's rear wheel cylinders was leaking so I just replaced them all... I'll get back to ya.

Steven, Toyota list the rear, left, front wheel cylinder as an upper in parenthesis. Also the toyota stock number is 47570-69065. Should be around $58.00 new from RH Toyota. Hope that helps.

Thanks, If all else fails I will go that route. Rick was a pleasure to deal with when I ordered the hubcaps, so if I cant rebuild it I will definitely order from him again.

Damn - hit the reply button too early - can't help with the cylinder question - but with regards to the drum retaining screw - just asked that question on the main board myself - consensus is that bolt is only to hold the drum on the axle during the production process before the tires are put on - no need to replace - search back in 40 tech about 7 to 10 days.

Mooker unless you are a skilled rebuilder....which you probably are....the easy route is to just replace the whole cylinder. If nothing else it'll save your sanity...plus you won't have to worry about it goin out again. But if you do rebuild it take a lot of pics....would make a good thread for the tech section for others who are rebuilding there's. David didn't you rebuild yours at one time?

Decided to bite the bullet and order a new one from NAPA. I did also order the rebuild kit though (only 8 bucks) and will rebuild it one rainy day when I'm bored. Went ahead and got new brake shoes front and rear while I was at it. I was going to order new ones from Manafre along with a bumper but that didnt work out so well for me (long rant ).

I didn't rebuild. I replaced them all...all 8. :)
OEM is the way to go. I'm not a fan of those after market cylinders.
You get what you pay for and brakes aren't a place to scrimp and
pinch pennies. IMHO

Normally I would go with the OEM but I have read very good things about the NAPA (supposed to be the same but with the TEQ ground off). Plus they could get them 9 days faster. I am ready to take the 40 for a spin. New tires will be here today! Its been sitting in my yard for 3 weeks or so and I havent gotten to drive it more than 1/2 mile total! :crybaby:.
