New owner of a FJ80. 1994 Land Cruiser. The Vehicle has about 190K. Rear Pinion seal was leaking and I had a shop replace the seal. He told me that the Pinion was bad and had slop. There was no noise before the repair, now there is a slight grinding and roar. How much does a typical ring and pinion run with labor. He was not comfortable in doing this job, since he said he mostly works on domestics. Is it better to find a used diff or replace the ring and pinion.

Thank you,

Joe

Shortly after I bought mine, the rear diff plug fell out on a long trip. A complete rebuild with R&P cost about $700.00 at a diff shop. You could save money if you can take in the 3rd member yourself. It might be a good time to think about re-gearing F&R if you are going to go with bigger tires.

Back when I worked at a shop the did a lot of import work, We regularly sourced used rears for trucks. Way cheaper. Change the fluid with synthetic and get at least a 30-90 day warranty on the parts. Check Car-part.com.

I went the stupid route: I had a shop fix it. Cost me like $1200. Well, they inspected the rear axle bearings and replaced a wheel stud for me also. I made them use Toyota parts and those are priced like gold.

I had planned to take out the third and do as much of the work as possible myself then just taken the third to the shop to finish it up. New baby getting sick did not allow for that.
OR
I could have bought a third already R & R'd, swapped it in and sold mine for some return $$$

Don't go to the shop unless you MUST. I could have saved about $700.

cpjoe: Do you know if the mechanic who replaced the pinion seal tightened the pinion nut beyond the original position??
