I'm in the process of baselining my new-to-me 2000 LC. The rear diff is pretty crudded up, looks like there is a little seepage at the top of the rear cover. I have found the part number for the OEM gasket. My question - is the gasket really needed, or can I just use Ultra Black RTV to make the seal? I've searched here and on the web, can't find an answer. Have next week off, this is on my to-do list, don't want to wait for a gasket to be delivered if I don't need it.

Thanks!
Mark

Gasket.

Pictures?

But wait, make sure what is leaking. This is big job if not a mechanic.

Note: wrong fluid, wrong grade or over filled can cause leak. Most common leak gasket (washer) of fill or drain plugs, vent tube, companion flange gasket then case gasket.

I do my own wrenching, so, yes, I know where the leak is. My only question, however, was whether RTV was an acceptable alternative to the OEM gasket.
