My rear bumper caps are all marked up, but in good condition. Can they be painted? If so what to use and how to prep.

Thanks .... :) :) :) :)

saw some vinyl paint rattle cans at OSH the other way that might work? Limited color choice probably though

Yes, they are paintable. I just did my front end caps a few weeks ago.

Bear in mind that they are plastic and so if you want the paint job to last, you need to use the right kind of paint additive. DuPont makes such a thing that provides additional flexibility to the paint (i.e., so it's not so brittle after it dries completely) which keeps it from chipping off.

The downside, is that to use this stuff, you can't use a rattle can (at least I'm not aware of anyone making rattle-can's with the "plastic" paint in them). It requires you to apply the base coat with the additive, then clear coat it. Not hard, but you need a compressor and paint gun, and the paint itself will be more expensive, though you'll have enough to do the job about 100 times! :D

There is a plastic paint avialble in cans but I haven't found it in the right color. I've painted quite a few front bumpers over the years and one set of rear bumper caps. I've used Hammerite Charcoal color in the past but that color is getting be more black. Rustoleum Textured Grey is pretty close and I used this on our 94 about 3 years ago. It is holding up well.

If they just need a touch up now and then, most autoparts carry "trim" or "bumper" paint. The black matched perfectly on my black LC, never looked to see if they have other colors.

Plastic paint is definitely available in rattle can. Finding the right color will be tough though. Krylon just came out with some for outdoor plastic furniture -- should work on any plastic.
