Finally found some time to start on the rear bumper.... first picture.

Not quite sure where I will take it to from here. Probably some type of tire carrier with the common wrap around the sides style.

Just started on mine last night too. Still in the demolition phase, but, so far I've trimmed about 2" off the rails. :D

More pictures soooooon... It just started to rain, and we are expecting over 1" in the next 24 hours, so progress has probably halted until Friday. It is very close to the body. Trim the frame? Look close in the lower left of the picture, just above my BFH... losing about 3". :D

I'm trying to incorporate the tow hook mounts as, well, bumper mounts too. I don't know if I'll keep them both or use just one.

Witht he shape of that rear bumper, if you buy some paint for the car from Christo, and also put 2 big eyes on the back window, then you will have a :) from the back :flipoff2:

Just be carefull of putting it too close. One bumper I had on my truck had really tight clearances. Not enough room to allow for the body to flex and I ended up slightly crunching a fender due to that. I'm sure you got that covered, but just wanted to mention it in case. Looks great so far. Shees though, if you're worried about rain :princess: , based on the way it's been lately, you'll be working on it through 2006. :D Looks good so far.

I love rain! It makes me happy when the swampers can be put to real use.

It does smile, dosn't it. :)

Two hooks are better than one, two open up better recovery angles for the line/strap.

There should be enough room, but thanks for looking out for problems, it is appreciated.

Looks very nice so far. What happened to all the pics in the FAQ? Am I the only one that cannot view them? If they are damaged I'll statrt a new thread for rear bumpers ideas and pics. What gives?

In an attempt to eliminate tire carrier vibration, two barrel hinges became one MEGA hinge today. I believe they are rated at about 2k lbs each, use a stainless pin with single ball pivot/bearing, and have zerk fittings for greasing.

Source for hinges.

That's a lot of metal.

I just cut about another 2" off of the end of my frame rails last night. Anxious to get the work day overwith soon. :D

Dang! I wish our 80 were mine. I'd love to tear it up and build a bumper. As it is the only way I was able to put sliders on it was to borrow it long enough to wreck them. Then I had permission to replace them. Hmm...maybe I need to drag the bumper over something?

Well Meat Grinder is probably not a good thing to drag it over. I went out with my incomplete rear bumper and managed to smash it pretty good. Lost a sidewall in a fairly new tire, bent a rear control arm, bent a tie rod, and smashed my bumper and dented a rear quarter. So I need to get to some fixing and I definitely have some new bumper ideas. I think I'm going to do some trimming of the body too.

When did you do that?

Worked on bumper again tonight. Starting again in the morning. ;p

You guys should make those rear corner panel protections higher....I swear you'll be happy you did.

Agreed. I was considering modifying the body and pushing things waaaaaay up there, but decided to build a bumper to fit around the existing structure. I have some UMWPE plastic, and may build it into the lower part of the bumper to help it slide off.... because it will be sliding off things. :D :bounce:
