Hi all,

I changed the rear brakes the other day, rotors and pads. This is the second time I change them.

Anyways, it seems as though the handbrake is dragging inside the hub despite loosening fully. When turning by hand it's free spinning no issue, but as soon as I put the wheels on and drive you can hear it scraping.

Sounds like a heat shield scraping which is what I thought it was at first but it doesn't seem to be. Don't hear it at slower speeds just faster.

Wife took it today and said it smelled like brakes when she got to her destination. I'm assuming that this will just burn off as the inside of the new drum is probably a slightly different shape then the pads now and need to conform together.

It did similar last time (The sound) but no smell. Thoughts? I figure it will sort it self out.

PS. There was tons of pad left on shoes so didn't touch them.

Did you use OEM rotors? I did not and had the same issue. The rotors were slightly smaller than OEM (inner diameter) and the inside hub would hit the front edge of the parking brake and caused a horrible sound. Took it to the dealer and had them remove about a millimeter or two. All fine after that.

Yeah not OEM. Maybe I'll live with it. I set the p brake full on and no way it will hold. Like pull handle gets so tight you think arm will break. Can't spin wheels but easily creeps.

I'm thinking they need bedding in.

They need adjustment, not bedding in, and it will not sort itself out. It sounds like you loosened the hand brake to avoid the noise and now have very little hand brake. Read up on the procedure or have the dealer do it. It's a multi-step process and may be complicated by non-OEM drums. Don't "live with it", you may need that brake someday!

They are adjusted fully now. As in, I set them until they held the drum tight. Then backed off 1 click. I checked both cables go very loose when the handle is dropped and very tight when pulled on.

According to the service manual you should go back 8 clicks. If I go back 8 clicks it's useless. I went through the entire procedure in the manual and decided 1 click was obviously going to give me the best hold.

It sounds like this is the issue really. Even after a short drive and removing the drum there was material inside which looked like it came from the leading edge of the shoe.

Sad you can't go aftermarket with these I guess. I just spent $2500 repairing the truck and the brake issue came up so went aftermarket.

This guy's video is really good (tundra) but basically the same.

Maybe my cable does need adjusting I'll double check.

If it is free by hand but starts dragging with the vehicle weight could it be a bad rear wheel bearing? The hub flange (and connected disc/drum) is moving under the weight of the wheel while the brake shoes remain stationary WRT the axle housing?

RWB jobs are not uncommon on the 200. Do you have any play with the wheel mounted?

nah it's a scraping sound from both sides. You can't actually hear it inside the vehicle at all. Only from the wheel. I checked the bearings while I was doing the work was fine.

Wife said the sound is almost gone now

Well brake holds now in gear :) I didn't do anything, probably was still some grease despite cleaning with brake clean.

Still scraping sound, but left side went away and right side is only occasionally depending on attitude of the truck I'm thinking it is the heat shield now, I'll look for marks.
