Hi guys
I'm thinking of having the rear axle serviced - it took rather a pounding last time I was in the Sahara.
Is there anything that I should look out for? I mean, is there anything that I might need to know before its taken to bits? Do the rear axles wear in different ways from the front?

That's okay if I could actually FIND the relevant secion in FAQs!
Don't forget, I've only be subscribe a very short time and haven't had chance to fully explore the site - I don't have internet acces at home so it has to be in works time - sorry

And another thing, after finally getting anywhere near FAQs on rear axle it doesn't inform me about potential things that I need to look out for - are there any other list members that can give me an indication of the likely areas of damage? - if I take the car to the garage they'll take the rear axle to bits and then charge me loads to put it back together again! I'm trying to avoid extortion from garages, and just need some information on the likely trouble spot areas in the rear axle, as they say, forwarned is forarmed!

If you have no bad noises, a simple drain, refill, and inspection of the gear oil in the differential should suffice. Look for significant metalic particals and chunks that could indicate something is wearing severely. The wheel bearings will probably require a repack, replace the inner axle shaft seals along with the larger bearing seals and you should be quite good to go. Use synthetic oils and greases if available.... cheap insurance for the hot Sahara.

Thankyou BJ - good information - short, succint, clear - so not much to worry about then... Its due for a service in the next few months, so after the front axle is sorted I'll start on the rear
Cheap insurance indeed - I carried about 0.5 or so of a tonne last time I was there, and things did work loose on a few occasions, so lots of banging around in the back and shifting loads...and used up all my ratchet tie-downs to secure the load. I thought the chassis might have taken a beating but after examination the concern I had about this, evaporated.
Thanks again
