Today the six studs retaining the right rear axle flange to the hub broke and the axle came out, about 12 inches. It wasn't far to home, so I put the axle shaft in the luggage area and drove home with the transfer case locked. Yes, it made a mess. I have replacement hub to install. My problem is that I can't get the axle shaft to slide into the carrier, it has factory lockers. Any suggestions? I hope that I don't have to remove the third member and index something.

The locking collar drops out of position if you pull the axle out unlocked.

Thanks for the comment about the locking collar moving. I make a tool to move it, without taking the third member out.

shouldn't have to make anything, its been a few years, but Im 99.9% sure you can move that collar just by taking the indicator switch out, and using a small screwdriver.

I could look down the inside of the axle housing and see the collar, which was out of place. I reached in with a piece of 1/2" steel rod and moved the collar until it appeared centered. The collar moves easily but stays where you move it. I put the axle in, wiggled it a little, and it slid through the collar and into the splines.
