I want to order Speedi Sleeves for my rear axle before I take it apart. Can anyone with a spare rear shaft give me a measurement of the diameter of the shaft where the seal rides? Preferably the average of three measurements. Either that or does someone know the Speedi Sleeve part number for that application? I've seen numbers for the front axle shafts, but not the rears.

That would probably work. I think Tacomas are that way. Still, I'd rather use the Speedi-Sleeves.

I did my rear bearing rebuild at 220,000 mi and haven't touched it and it has 393,000 on it right now. I wonder if the seal has leaked and if its full of gear lube... Might have to take a look someday. If it is then I will just inspect and replace the wheel seals and leave the axle seal out. I am due for new rotors so I will check things when I have the rotors are off.

Check your diff breather first...make sure it is not plugged.
Remove the hose and axle fitting if there is a rush of air then you are plugged.
Clean out axle fitting tube as this can plug easily, check valve at end of rubber hose.

We're getting off track a bit. I want to use a sleeve to fix the groove that I'm sure exists on my rear shafts. Does anyone know what size to order or at least if they are the same size as the front?

If you check the breather and it is plugged then you will not require a sleeve.

Search below for you.

Looking at the SKF Speedi Sleeve Catalog the part #s for a 35mm unit are #99139 for the reg one and #99820 for the HD gold unit. Sound right?

A sleeve is required if there is a groove in the axle shaft. My front axle shafts were badly grooved. I haven't taken the rear axle apart yet, but I assume they are grooved as well. A plugged diff breather will also cause leakage, but it doesn't preclude the axle shafts being grooved.

Thanks for the search. Is that for the rear axle? I know the front is 35mm. Is the rear the same? I know the oil seals are different, but that might be due to the fact that the rear spindles aren't removable.

Inner seals are the same for both front and rear.

ARB said Cruiser axles are 1.31" diameter .. but I'm pretty sure that's not exact enough to order what you want.

Yeah I need micrometer measurements of the sealing surface. On the front axles, that surface is the largest diameter portion of the axle and is machined. 1.31" is about 33 mm. A 35 mm sealing surface would be about right. I actually ordered a set of 35 mm sleeves. We'll see if they fit once I get it all apart.

Thanks!

Inner seals are the same for both front and rear.

The seals are not the same front and rear. The front is type T, the rear is type S. The front has a metal ring on it and a larger OD. The rear is all rubber and has a smaller OD. However, they may have the same ID. I don't have two handy to compare to each other.

Just pulled the rear apart. The seal surface on the rear is the same diameter as the front. However, it's pretty short. Not sure a sleeve will even fit. Luckily mine isn't too worn. I had some gear oil in my bearings, but it was still mainly grease.
