Yesterday I had the same problem. Passenger side shaft would not make the final 4 inches. Looked inside the housing and and i could see the splines were not centered, preventing the shaft from going any further. Used the broomstick or rake handle in my case to move the splines up and recenter. Did this on the passenger side. It was quite easy to fix
Just wanted to offer another solution if anyone runs into this problem.
The 1st time I replaced the rear bearings I did not encounter this problem and it was not locked. Got a regear to 5.29s a couple years back so perhaps the regear causes the issue?
