When I put the rear shafts back in do I HAVE to have new paper gaskets, or can I use blue RTV like I'm sealing the diff with?

I usually put permatex over the old gasket.

My old paper jobbies got destroyed when I pulled the shafts. Is permatex just like silicone?

RTV will be fine if properly prepped, etc. It's neither a heated nor a pressurized joint, so rather benign in the scheme of things.

Problem is, I need it NOW so I can wheel on Sunday. I'm gonna rebuild both axles after the wheeling season, so I'm gonna go OEM end to end at that time.

go down to any auto store and buy a sheet of the paper and cut a new one.

If you do make your own, a used empty cartridge (rifle or pistol) makes a good punch to make round holes for bolts. The edges are pretty sharp - otherwise it can be tough to make round holes.
