In the middle of the radiator replacement. Do I really have to pull the whole fan, fan clutch and pulley to make room to get the fan shroud out? As in, removing the fan belts to get the pulley off?

I have everything else removed, rad unbolted and trying to get to the last tranny fluid line, but there is no space without removing the shroud. Thought I could do it without pulling the shroud, am close, but I guess we gotta do it.
 
OK, I tried removing the fan from the front of the clutch, but that doesn't seem to help much. Now I have a loose fan that won't clear the clutch to come off and a loose shroud too.
 
Okay, I totally read the post wrong, let me try this thing again. You've already got the fan and the shroud loose if I'm reading right so try this ... either hold by hand, or bolt back on the shroud ... remove the fan by angling it between the top of the shroud and the top of the block ... then remove the shroud and then remove the radiator. Your problem right now, again, if I'm reading right is that everything's too loose and you cannot wiggle anything out. It is much easier to wiggle the fan out from behind the shroud than it is to wiggle the shroud out between the rad and the fan. Hope that helps and sorry for misinterpreting the thread the first time through. :cheers:
 
BTW, you can leave the belts on (assuming that they are good enough to leave on and that they are OEM belts).

Turbocruiser, thanks for the help. That's a great pic too.

No, I tried to remove the fan alone from the clutch and that didn't work, so I put it back on the clutch. Now I would need to try and remove the clutch (with fan attached) from the front of the waterpump and pulley as you show. Those four bolts are on tight and I am having a tough time breaking them loose since the clutch is "free wheeling".

So darned close I can taste it !!
 
You will get it! In the hope it helps, I removed my fan and clutch together while they were tightly bolted together. My fan clutch bolts were extremely easy to remove but I put a few drops of oil on them first and I "shocked" the wrench by snapping sorta fast through the first few pulls - not a large force, just a fast force - you can also sorta grip the hub with a strap wrench or with your wife's rubber dishwashing gloves (those things are like the GI Joe Grip) - it does not take too much force and actually too much will make a really bad day out of this thing so put a few drops of oil on it, have a drink, and then go back a bit later. BTW, when you get to the re-install, I suggest completely bolting down the radiator and then whilst holding BOTH the fan AND the shroud in the typical configuration sliding them in together loosely. For whatever reason (prolly the fact that I wanted absolutely NO contact with the radiator fins) this worked better for me on the re-install. It prolly woulda worked better for the removal too but the thought came to me too late! DOH! :cheers:

OK, fan and clutch out, shroud out, radiator out !! Found my strap wrench and used it to hold the pulley still while I removed the nuts.

Now we are going back together. New rad going in, need to find some new hose clamps as these are junk that someone put in a while ago. Not Toyota. Prolly gonna use my favorite german hose clamps. Gotta say, I'd do three BMW radiators before doing one of these. Those are a snap. Although, I guess I could do this one a lot faster next time.

Shroud removal

I had the same problem and not much time to play around with, so I used an interference hack saw and cut the shroud top and bottom and could easily remove the two pieces finished the job and made a joining piece to keep the engine end of the shroud together.
a bit rough bit easy to remove for further work
 
For a radiator replacement Toyota Land cruiser's are more complicated than they should be....many bolts and removal of the rad frame and all kinds of other things inbetween.
