I have purchased my first cruiser (fj60), they had dropped in a low mile motor but did not set up the air-c, Should I try and recharge the old system or replace it with a newer (cheaper gas ) system?:wrench:

First of all, welcome to the board.

If you can find the refrigerant that works in your current system,
it seems that would be the way to start. If it is unavailable to you,
and you need a/c, it would make sense to convert to the newer
a/c system.

At this time of year, where are you that you would need a/c?

I know here in Aussie they have a product called HYCHILL which i believe goes into new or old systems it is a R12 based product ,they may have an equivalent in the U.S.A.

R12 runs colder, the down side is that it is much more expensive.
The problem that can occur if you convert to r34 is that the oils they use in the refrigerant are not compatible. This can lead to ruining your compressor.

This is not a given though. Many people have added r34 to existing systems a little at a time with no ill affects. Just a gamble.

Be sure if you do have it converted do it at a licensed shop where they handle the gases properly. The stuff really is bad for the environment.

I personally dropped the dime and used r12 and was very happy with my decision last summer.
