Going to do a poll.

For those that have re-geared their 80 series rear e-locked differential, did you need new shims or were you able to get it set up within spec with the shims used in the factory set up. Trying to decide if I should contact CDan and get some on order or not. I want to get the gearing done in a day and not have to wait a couple of weeks for the factory only shims to finish up. Kind of an expensive deal to order one of each, since I don't know which ones are in there. What to do?

Thanks,

Jack

You will need shims and there are ~23 thicknesses to choose from. You won't know what you need until you set it up.

You could send the diff to Poser as he is the only one I know of in the country that has an entire set. I got them for him a while back and it took several weeks to get all of them.

Soon we will have another source of shims once someone gets his laser going...

Wow, didn't realize there were that many, and I suppose they are really inexpensive too.:D

Dan, just how much are we looking at for a full set?

Who and how long?

You'll need new shims, most likely you got a Motive Gear set right? Zuk at gearinstalls.com has a full set of shims I helped him get :D. You might also have to convince him to do them but you will not find better work!

Yep, Precision boxed Motives.

Going to do them myself. I have done motor work, t-case work and everything else regarding 4wheeling, I just have never installed gears, so I really want to learn and yes I have an experienced gear guy walking me through it.

Bear80, I downloaded Zuks procedure on your set. Good stuff.

I won't be doing anything until January, that is why I am starting my homework now.

Thanks for the help guys.

~150 bucks. There is currently enough stock in the US depot system to make up ONE full set.

I am in the process of regearing to 5.29 right now. I am shimless too. What I plan to do is design package of shims that would be less than 23pcs but would give you all the combinations needed. rather than have one shim per side there will be 3 pcs per side. I will laser cut a package for my own use. After I get it dialed in will cut 10 or so sets for sale and onur aka beno/raudhrigh will be the sole world distributor. We will probably set it up that you paypal him. price right now is a guess but it should be $150 or less shipped to your door.

Correction: beno will be the sole distributor. ;)

I mistakingly posted under Ruadrigh's user name.

If you have any questions regarding the shims, price, shipping, etc., please feel free to contact me via PM or email.

Best.

I ended up buying shims. Waiting for them for a couple of weeks and then having the shims I bought go to a machinist to cut down because somehow the ones I bought didn't work right. It was a miserable experience. And I cursed at the engineer who decided to go to shims instead of the the adjustable bearing retainers.

We can add that engineer to the growing list of "cursed Toyota engineers" who brought us wonderful locations for the PHH, the VSV, the wiring harness through the intake plenum...

The locker setup requires shims. Had they made the locker like the front, carrier adjusters could have been used. However, the locker used in the rear was the first locker design by Toyota and the front version came later.

When I ordered my shims I got all of them in two days. My dealer was also willing to take a return on the ones I didn't use, but Zuk ended up buying them from me.

Thanks Bear80 for letting me buy those shims...now I have complete sets for 86~95 V6 IFS fronts....86~95 IFS 4 cyl fronts.....T100 rear 3rds.....and 9.5" E-Lockers :)

Anybody that wants a sound gear install on their 9.5 just get in touch with me. All ring/pinions and master kits are reasonably priced from JT's.

I consider it a must to have the complete set....they can be pretty reasonable (all 23) from http://1sttoyotaparts.com/partscat.html and for a little more than $70 you can have a complete set.

Here's the specs and part numbers for the 9.5 E-Locker shims...
