Hi guys. I bought a 2000 LC a couple of months ago and have been baselining it for a while now. At some point it started making a rattling noise when going over bumps, it is clearly coming from the front suspension driver side (sounds like a worn out bushing, as if 2 suspension components were hitting each other). But after spending LOOOTS of hours messing with it, changing ball joints, shocks, sway bar links and bushings, wheel bearing, checking the hub assembly multiple times, and even having 2 different shops look at it, the annoying sound persists. I am starting to think that it might be something in the support of the torsion bar under the driver. I LOVE THIS TRUCK but i am getting tire of dumping money and time just to see the rattle continue after every repair. Any suggestions or idea of what could be the cause?

I went through a similar issue. I have 98 from south Texas 340k. It would sound like I was pulling a rickety trailer every time I hit a bump or pothole. With trial and error I found (after replacing most of the front suspension) that the emergency brake line Gromit/bushing that’s attached to the rear axle was missing causing excess rattling and then confirmed that my rear bushings for the pan hard bar as well as the control arms need to be replaced. As well as the shock absorbers. Bit if a pain but well worth the effort. Good luck tracking it down.

Check the heat shields on your cats. The welds rust and break and they start rattling.
Cats seem to be fine though. Even after a good shake at the pipe, no sound at all

Thanks. I’ll check the emergency break line. What is the pan hard bar!? Excuse my ignorance, I’m new to the Land Cruiser world and try to learn as I go.

Gently apply the brakes while going over a bump. If the rattle disappears then it’s your brake pads rattling inside your calipers. Check for the aptly named “anti-rattle spring”.
Already checked, that’s not it. Whether or no the brakes are working, it rattles over bumps, and both sides anti rattle clips look fine. Good life left on the pads and the rotor too.

you can’t part grenade a rattle. You’ll have to keep shaking things till you figure out what it is. Skids, cat shields, dust shields, windshield cowls, etc. There’s a lot that could rattle. My roof rack rattles like a lot. Can get annoying for sure.

My wife’s 4Rs exhaust broke loose and would rattle in drive stopped because of how the car squatted being in drive. Slip it in N and it’d go away instantly.

Swing a rubber mallet at everything you can underneath. That’ll help reveal anything that’s loose, but needs a bit of persuading to reveal itself.

Engine mounts? Transmission mounts? anything loose in the engine bay?
