I looked in the FAQ and did a search, but my transfer case shifter rattles. If I push it one way or another it goes away, or if I pull it up it goes away. This rattle is driving me nuts, and I was wondering if there was a quick fix for it, other than turning up a radio. My fj60 has no radio because I cannot figure out how to mount it without mounting brackets. My FJ55 had the same noise, and the PO just bungee corded it to something else.

As Godwin said, check the bushings. One other thing that might be happening is that the shifter mechanism might be trying to move the gears in the TC and they are hitting. The lower rubber boot may have become stiff and is pushing on the lever and trying to engage the gears. By lower I mean the boot under the vehicle that keeps mud from coming up through the floorboard. You can give it some relief with your pocket knife. Also, the HI/LO and 2/4 WD selections are held in position by spring powered steel balls that fit into notches in the shift rods. These springs may be weak. Cruiser Dan can fix you up on this. Both balls and springs are the same part (ball part# 90360-10003 cost $0.88, springs part #90501-16115 cost $1.39). Easy install but you need a magnet to get the ball out.

Same problem. All my shifter bushings are new and the transfer case is freshly rebuilt. I can move it a little in any direction and it stops the noise but soon it creeps back, drives my nuts as I have sound proofed the inside. Im not sure what to do other then some lame bungee contraption.

Bump - this is the exact same issue! Fresh transfer case rebuild with all new bearings, etc. No issues going in or out of 4HI, just this stupid rattle.

Driving me crazy! Currently have the ghetto bungee cord, but occasionally, maybe 1 or 2x a day, it'll rattle. I can gently nudge it forward and it goes away...

Suggestions? Something loose in the linkage or ?

Just bumping this back up - any thoughts on what this might be associated with?

Giving this another bump. I'm going mad listening to it.

Hey srogers maybe it's an Oregon issue!! HA!! Mine does the exact same thing and is driving me mad!!!

It made it a little better to take the shifter nob off. It seems to resonate a little less now. Still dealing with an annoying metallic rattle when I drive but it's a little quieter.

Anyone....anyone......

Has to be an Orygun thing then!

Similar rattle repaired

I had a similar situation with my BJ60 quite some time ago. Looked long and hard and the problem turned out to be a cracked mounting bracket. Sorry I can't be more specific about the location but it was hard to see and required removing the bracket through the floor pan to weld for repair which was an immediate fix for the rattle . I do remember the crack was high and not easily seen from below. Will look for a diagram that may serve as a reminder!

Good lead CanCrusher - I'll check that out...

Not only should the bushings be in good shape on the pivots of the shift lever, they should also have some tension. There should be a spring style (also called a wavy)washer under the nut and flat washer. This adds some drag to the pivot so it doesn't rattle back and forth or side to side

Pull the rod that is attached to the tcase and check the shift lever, if it pivots with no tension I bet that is the rattle' But crawl under the rig and I bet you will find the tcase lever is somewhat loose. If you need a pic I have a tranny in my shop right now that has a shift lever on it that I can take a pic of.

Tony that would be fantastic! A pic would be perfect...

Did you one better. Added a write up with pictures to thewagonway site. Click on this link and it should clear things up.

That is a fantastic write up! Thank you, crawling under the rig right now!

Alright, crawled under there, dropped the skid plate and it appears that I am missing the "wavy" washer. I tightened the 17mm nut on that part of the linkage somewhat (it still shifts in and out of 4wd easily), but am assuming I should replace the wavy washer? Didn't take it for a drive (it's 23 degrees out and I'm lazy!). I had my mechanic rebuild the transfer case this past spring so it must have gotten missed on the replacement.

Assuming I need to replace the washer, how easy is it to do on the rig? Will all that linkage move apart and be a compete pain to reinstall?

Also, I looked on SOR, but I couldn't find that washer - any ideas as to part number of where to source just that part? I'll hit my local auto parts store tomorrow but didn't know how specialized it is...

If you go to the SOR.com, page 074, in the drawing for 80-87 4 speed it is listed as item #48 if my eyes don't deceive me. Call them to be sure if you need to.

It's not that hard to remove that lever on the rig just time consuming. You can always cheat and install it on the outside of the lever (where it is in the picture I put in the write up). It should work and will avoid taking things apart. That way all you have to do is take the nut and two washers off, put the wavy washer on then re install the nut and two washers.

Excellent -thanks Tony, looks to be right

For future search reference it is SOR part number 074-48K "washer"
