Range Rover Sport versus LX570

Used to own a LR4 - biggest turd of a car I've ever owned. Mid 80s GM level reliability. My wife was the one who mostly drove it - never took the thing off road. Nonetheless, the differential broke along with the half shafts and all four calipers were warped. All within 10,000 miles of driving on nicely paved roads. After the third time it broke down, I sold that POS. Never again. They make great looking cars that drive nicely, but the reliability is insanely bad.

Pretty hard to beat the looks of this bad boy.

Different strokes ... I loved the LR4 I had the past 4 years. Put 55K on it. 0 interest in an RRS or an FFRR as I didn't find that they would meet my needs. Took the LR4 off-road many times, camped out of the back of it, long road trips, used it as a base camp platform for hiking, cycling and snow shoeing. 90% of the time I had everything behind the front seats stowed and flat. (The cargo area of the RRS doesn't go flat.). When camping or when using for shelter in a storm in the mountains I would raise/deploy one of the 3rd row seats and keep everything else flat and as a work surface for my photography gear. I've never seen another vehicle that had a cargo space as versatile as the LR3/4. An RRS would be a waste of money for me. But, again, I couldn't care less about what others think of what I drive. Different strokes...

Why the change to an LC? Closest thing I could find to an "adventure" platform that would give me more towing capacity/comfort than the LR4. And some day the reliability will matter though my LR4 had no issues - and I worked it prett hard.

Love the LC though I miss the versatility of the LR4 cargo area, the stock off-road hesitate and approach/departure angles. But the LC will do well enough for our needs and does seem to tow better.

Congrats on your Range Rover. The reliability has picked up a lot since 2013.

I totally got why people buy these things and nothing else. Nothing drives like a Range Rover. Perfect garage to me is a supercharged autobiography and a 200 :D

The RRS looks like a Ford Explorer. Anytime I see the newer explorer from a distance, I think it's a RRS and vice versa. I test drove the big boy SC Rover and that thing is awesome! Came close to buying one but it doesn't have the cargo space I need and it stands out as a "look at me". Granted I don't care but in Boulder where I park a lot, those damn hippies love keying expensive cars and SUVs. I take my LC to Boulder and they don't think twice because it's a Toyota. I actually am more drawn to the LR4 but with its reliability and new weak engine "V6" is a no go for me. SuV's need a big strong engine with Torque. I'm actually excited about the 2018 wider G550 coming out in '18. I know a few people who own them and love it. Very reliable and they abuse them here in CO. Just make sure to get a pre-owned with full extended warranty...just in case...expensive to fix like an old timepiece. :wrench::zilla:

I won't hate, it does look great in white. Like a Storm trooper

I owned a GL 450 once for about 18 months, and it was in the shop approximately 4 of those months. It was plagued with air suspension issues - ever time I turned around, one corner was lower than all the rest - the air in the suspension bladder leaked out. I replaced a grand total of 6 corner (yes, two were replaced twice) bladders. The compressor for the suspension also burned up.

The GL ride was pretty awful. The back end was unstable - it would do a mini-fishtail effect on rough surfaces and bumps. It felt very unstable. New Michelins were of no help.

The GL was in the same class as a Dodge Durango I owned once. Simply awful.

My buddy loved and hated his GL550. He also had issues with it. I wonder if it's because they are built in the U.S. All my Mercs have been and are AMG models and have had zero issues. Another reason I would only get a Gwagon of the SUV Merc lineup since it's built like a Swiss watch, still not as reliable as the LC though...tough to beat.

Mercedes core values changed from ridiculously long life vehicles to cheap, plasticky junk that has a lot of style but not much else. For years they were borrowing a lot of parts from the Mopar bin and they haven't been the same since.

Sad really.

Junk, I don't think so. I've seen the build process and the quality of leather used from the basic C400 to the S63. The plastic used is of very high quality. Nothing wrong with plastic as most other materials add weight and won't last as long. The engines are pretty amazing as well. The reason they might get a bad wrap is people don't realize they are intended to be hammered on...often...and not babied around the mall. Sorry, but I've owned many Mercs and they have all been very solid and very few cars can even compete with them. When it comes to Mercs. buying the cheapest version is always a disappointment because you expect more from that brand and you're forced to buy the top end product to really enjoy it.

My GL cost $73K and I believe I lost $22K on it in 18 months so I think I paid a hefty enough price for a good model. :)

Lol! I can understand that.

My sister has had 2 G-wagens. My BIL loves them. Seems like about 8k miles stuff starts working "not quite right." I cant see spending $100k+ on a truck and having it not work right in less than a year. Just a big status symbol. Not impressed at all. I am a huge car lover of all types, but I expect a vehicle to deliver. New cars being unreliable don't cut it. If I don't feel like it can go 200k miles, I'm not interested. Of course I refuse to buy new vehicles, so I don't fit into the normal 200 group of owners I think.

I have had three Gwagens over the years. Two 460 chassis trucks and one 462 truck. I drove them hard and they were always broken. All three were Grey market, German built trucks and they still had the worst reliability of anything I have ever owned. I did enjoy driving them. My wife was so mad at the 5k a time repair bills she finally put her foot down after we spent more than 15k in 12 months on repairs on one of them. Fully thing was I sold the last one and bought a loaded Ford Explorer. Never broke the three years I had it.

The LC is the only vehicle I buy pre owned. All my other rides are purchased with a lease and turned over every 2-3yrs. so if something goes wrong with it I don't really care since it's always under warranty and I get to drive the cars I really want to drive for the fun factor. I have never been stranded in any vehicle I've owned including Land Rovers. The G-Wagon is one of those love or hate relationships. The first time I drove these handbuilt machines I was in love but it just doesn't make sense to own one unless it

That's why you lease them or sell them before warranty runs out. Anything really expensive to fix and maintain are generally fun vehicles to own but not out of warranty.

I've never owned anything from LR/RR that managed to stay out of the shop longer than 3 months. All bought new so repairs were under warranty but what kind of pieces of s*** need a sensor, computer, suspension, trim pieces, etc fixed constantly (I'll qualify this with only pertaining to modern US sold luxury suvs and not defenders not available here as I have no experience with them). Their looks seduce you into putting up with their torture like dating a hot spoiled bitch. And, everyone who's dated a hot bitch sees right through it.

Everybody talks about how awesome they are off road. Sure, when they work. How about when mine left me, my 2 kids, and pregnant wife stranded in the middle of ranch country in Texas for 4 hrs because of a "computer problem." It was probably the 10th time in the shop in 2 yrs. And the last. I traded it in for a yukon that we drove 100k miles without much more than an oil change.

If you ACTUALLY want something that you can take off road (and come back), or anywhere outside a dealers free towing range, make sure it's not made by land rover. If we'd been stranded in the heat of summer in Texas, it could've been much worse. And, just to top it off, it was on a Sunday evening when everything was closed so rather than just jumping in a rental, my dad had to drive 2.5 hrs each direction to pick us up and get us home... in his Ford, which he pointed out incessantly.

If more people actually took their RR off road, I'm quite certain there would be either lots of tragedy or lots of lawsuits. They really are pieces of crap for people trying to portray affluence but are only fooling themselves or people who don't know better.
