I moved to Raleigh two years ago, and am looking for a good LC mechanic. Four Wheel Parts recommended Phil's Toy Store, and I was wondering if there were any other good techs out there.

I have a 1998 100 with 125k miles, and am thinking of having the timing belt/water pump done. The timing belt was done at 65k back in 2001, so I think it may be time.

Right now I am trying to find the best option: buy all of the parts and take to tech, get a tech to do it all, or buy the parts and take a weekend to do it with my father in law who is a mechanic.

Also, from other's experience, at this age, is it consensus to replace the following:

Thermostat with gasket and O-ring
Waterpump with gasket and O-ring
Upper hose
Lower hose
Timing belt
timing belt idler pulley left
timing belt idler pulley right
Timing belt tensioner
Serpentine belt
Serpentine Belt Idler Pulley
Serpentine Belt Tensioner
Cam seals (2)
Crank front seal

Am I missing anything?

Hopefully I can make it on Wednesday to Rally Point. Thanks for the input.

I used Jay @ Renaissance auto in Cary, as others here have done with pretty good success. He knows LCs and will allow folks to bring parts if you're really picky about certain things.

He did a suspension tweak on a 100 for me, as well as some engine/brake work.

I don't live in the area anymore, and I sure do miss having access to him!

I'd suggest Creech, just north of downtown off Atlantic. While not a LC-specific shop, I had many recommendations for them and took my GX there for the TB/waterpump. I asked that they use all OEM parts, their price was very very competitive and they did great work.

Call Jay at Renaissance Auto. His mechanic ( Ray I believe) did a great job on my Tbelt, steering rack, Ironman lift install back in 2013. I dropped off about 200 parts and numerous replacement hoses- no issues at all and very reasonable.
Phils toystore was sometimes hit and miss for me- used them for years. Now I do everything myself.

If you're gonna do it yourself, let me know, and we can work together- I'm gonna do my wife's 03 Tbelt/ water pump real soon. I plan to visit with y'all at Rally Point as well.

Awesome guys! I spoke with my father in law, and he looked at a thread on the tb/wp service, and said that it would something new to him since his experience is on american cars and tractors, so I think that it is best to go with Jay--I have an email out. Hopefully I will be able to supply parts and get this done at a quasi reasonable price.

Might as well bight the bullet and replace almost everything while I am out it...a couple of extra dollars is a drop in the bucket in the long run on these trucks.

Just spoke with Jay, he is a great guy and definitely knows LCs. Looking forward to using him on the 100 and LX470.

Thanks again for the tip, and @Porter, thanks for the offer to wrench on the LCs together, I may take you up on it at some point.
