Last week it was kinda rainy here in S Oregon and I’m topless right now so I was home for the most part while it was raining off and on and wanted to do another project. A few days before the weather came I got a matched spare (33x12.50) and needed a way to mount it. I have exhaust and evap stuff for my swap so I couldn’t hang it under the bed (I don’t even know if it’d fit or look okay if I did have room) so I figured I’d have to do something a little special. I was considering doing a swing out tire carrier but I didn't have the stuff on hand to build one strong enough or any good latch mechanism to anchor it for that matter, and I'm impatient. I remembered my girlfriend's old jeep Cherokee and how it had the spare mounted in the back cargo area. It looked okay so that was kinda my inspiration. I chose the passenger side to counterbalance (somewhat) my weight, corner to corner...

I wanted to tie it to some point on the rig so it would be hard mounted to something to increase the rigidity, but also easy to remove (no tools required). I figured I needed a way to cradle the tire while it was tied into the rig. I used my old tire carrier for the tire mount, and then welded some legs on it so it would sit upright (the following pic is after I welded the sleeve to it, as explained below)...

Coincidentally the bottom of the legs lined up with the bottom of the tire so everything was kinda sitting on the same plane so it held itself up nicely. I had some pipe on hand that I welded to a plate. That plate bolted to the lower part of the rollbar where the seatbelt nut is at...

This was the point I wanted to tie into for rigidity. With the pipe sticking out of the rollbar, I pressed the tire and cradle forward against it. I snugged the front of the tire up against the pipe coming off the rollbar with a tie down. There was more deflection than I wanted so I grabbed some spare tube lying around I used to sleeve into the pipe for another project. I welded a length of that “inner sleeve” tube to some square tube, and welded the square to a plate I welded on the leg of the tire carrier. This way the carrier slides into the tube that is anchored to the rollbar. If I would have designed it rather than built it on the fly I wold have made the leg line up with the tube support, thus eliminating the plate...you'll see what I mean in the pic below. After this I wrapped a tie down from anchor point, over the back of the mount, then down to the other point...

The rear leg isn't touching the plastic, it just sits hard in that position because the bottom of the tire is tight against the wheel well...

Now it hardly moves at all, I can grab the tire and rock the rig side to side, it's basically all rubber jiggle. Anyhow, it worked out good and I don’t really notice it in the rearview like I thought, it’s tucked behind the p/s head rest pretty well....

All I got to do is close up some ends and call it good for now. In the meantime I'd like to make the rear leg also with a condition to be able to slide into some tube so it mounts like the front, I think after that's done I can ditch the tie-down...
