I need to replace my rag joint, so what is the easiet way to remove it? Should I pull off the gear box or steering shaft?

What year and model cruiser do you have? Is it stock or saginaw conversion.

Its stock steering on a 74. I have a lot of play in my steering so I'm trying to tighten things up. My tie rods look good but my rag joint looks pretty bad.

I don't know if a 74 is the same or not, but I did this recently on my 77. I did it by pulling the steering shaft out of the way since it looked easier that way. Plus the bolts weren't as crusty. Removed the rag joint bolts, 4 bolts on the firewall for the steering column, and 2 bolts on the dash for the column. I think that's all that was required. The hardest part was getting the new joint on since there's not much room to work in there. Also mark the alignment everywhere before you start pulling it apart or your steering wheel will be crooked when you get it reassembled.

I just pulled the steering shaft and it worked. It was actually pretty easy that way. Thanks for your help.
