Okay, I have read/heard about people using the Scion radios in our cruiser. What I would like to know is if anyone thought (asking for opinions) a Toyota Matrix head unit would fit. Reason I ask is simple, I own a matrix and hate the stereo in it. Yes, the obvious next question is "If you hate it, why put it into the Cruisah!" It is better than what is in the cruiser now and for that matter is fine for what I would use it for in the cruiser.

It is a double din size and it would be coming out of a 2005 Matrix XR and was the premium stereo without navigation.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

If it's a double DIN it will fit, you just need to figure out the wiring of it.

Most likely, it will be plug and play.
I did the Scion unit swap and all the plugs
were there (one was taped up and not in use.
On the Scion unit, my LC factory brackets fit right on as well.

Are you sure on this? I'm not asking so much in relation to the Matrix stereo, just double-din size in general. My (arguably limited) research found that the aftermarket double-din stereos are pretty much identical in size. However, many of the factory OEM stereos are listed as double-din but vary greatly in height, width, and depth. Height being the least amount of variation, but width and depth varying a great deal.

In particular, I attempted to use the 6-disc changer from a 1998 cruiser in my '96 and found it was too deep to fit (the brackets wouldn't line up and it stuck out the front - it would have also required some minor cutting of the dash in my 80).

I also tried a newer Sequoia 6-disc changer (I really like the 6-disc idea) and found it was workable on height and depth, but was far too wide.

Finally, after reviews on this site, I broke down and purchased a 2006 Scion single disc :frown: stereo but with mp3 support (should be close to the same overall music play time) and XM built-in (with Sirius and Ipod connections via and aux port). I haven't received it yet, but I'm comfortable of the fit based on what I've read here and for a mere $66, it was a great eBay bargain.

So back to the issue (sorry for the long history), are all "double-din" stereos supposed to be the exact same height, width, and depth?
