I am installing a new dash. This puppy is virgin, and has an intact radio 'hole' and stock radio bracket.

DO WNY OF YOU KNOW OF A CURRENT MODEL RADIO THAT WILL FIT IN THE STANDARD DASH OPENING?

I appreciate your help on this, since my Blaupunkt is now toast, and I am buying a new stereo anyway. I need blues.

I took the factory un-molested unit out of the dash and wanted to install my Alpine headunit that is a standard din size. I searched everywhere to find either a headunit or trim piece that would allow a standard size headunit, to no avail. I called Crutchfield, they said nothing like that exists. I thought surely they were mistaken. I then called SOR to just ask if anyone in the parts department had ddone an install that looked half way desent. The guy said I would need to buy some ABS plastic and cut it out my self.

I made a template that I can email actual size to you. You could then trace it onto some ABS (that you can get from Circuit City) and cut it out. It's tight enough that it won't move around. I have pics of final install of Alpine+ipod+xm commander, but the pics are too large in size. If you can tell me how to compress the pics I will post asap.

Mike, you can use the stock radio trim plastic with a single DIN install. Before you instal the dah, take the stock brackets off and use a bandsaw or cutoff wheel and cut the holes that bolt into the top of the dash into slots instead. Then you can move the stock brackets further apart to accomodate a DIN size deck. Bolt the radio in nice and snug and then put the new dash on. As far as the trim in front, I reused the stock trim piece (mine was broken, but I got it to cover up the empty space pretty well). The brackets under the dash top will hold the radio sufficiently and the trim will only be for looks as opposed to holding the radio in place.

I just put a new pioneer deck in my 60/ the dash off. Fiirst I riveted to sheet metal wings onto the sides of the new deck sleeve so that its profile was the same as the stock radio plastic trim. Hammered the rivets flush so that the deck could slide into sleeve. Painted face of sleeve semi-gloss black. Then I made new brackets out of heating duct splines that just folded underneath radio and riveted where they crossed under the deck. After riveting and bolting to dash studs, the bracket was about 3/16 away from bottom of sleeve. Oops- filled gap with sticky back carpet floor glides. Then inserted sleeve into opening and bent tabs on sleeve to lock it to face of dash. After install, I now have only about a 1/4 inch of painted sheet metal showing on either side of the plastic trim and the deck is removeable. For a deluxe install, the sheet metal wings could be painted to match dash color or covered with scrap vinyl and blended in with vinyl repair.

I have an Eclipse in my 60........fit just fine and sits back in the hole not flush with the front.

when mine was stolen, i tried like crazy to find the correct radio mount...no longer made. if you know of any old vw places, i was told the vw bus' used the same mount. instead, i threw a peterbilt radio blank in and put my stereo in a tuffy.

I don't suppose that you have a picture? I do not have a stock radio bezel. The PO of my 60 mounted some ugly Sony with a faceplate covering the entire hole.

More parts chasing perhaps. Thanks.

I removed my dashboard, cut two strips of metal from an old license plate, drilled some holes in them, hung my alpine in the right spot, and put the dash back on with the stereo attached. There are a couple of 2-3 mm gaps but you don't notice them unless you're looking.

Could some of you with good installs please post pics?

With these new head units, are any of you blowing out your stock speakers? I would think that the wattage would kill them pretty quickly.

I will take a picture of my setup, although the guts of it how I cut the brackets are inside the dash and can only be seen by removing the dash. I'll see what I can come up with for you, or draw a diagram if I can't get a pic.

As far as that pocket, I think it will wqork for FJ62's, but not FJ60's. I spent a lot of time looking at all the Metra kits and others like it to find something to mount the radio, but there is nothing. It's the stock radio with stock brackets or a homegrown setup. As far as speakers, mine has replacements in the front doors and doesnt have any rear speakers so I can't give a good answer. But with my upgraded fronts, I get decent non-distorted sound from my 200watt head unit even at highway speeds witht he windows down.

i have a CB in my truck....its the retro model. dremel the dash to make it work.....i'll take a pic of it.

Thanks gentlemen. Very much. I have a fresh dash and the brackets are intact. I was thinking that I could fab a retainer/bezel and make some kind of inner bracket for the DIN radio/CD. I have four Blaupunkt speakers installed - but the radio is NG. Figured that while I had the dash ready for install, I'd set up the radio same time.

Thanks

Mike

The 1999 -2005 78/79 series should fit. They have the same hole as a 75 series and the 75 series is the same as a 60.
Oz wreckers have boxes of them.

SO, any idea where to find one? Names, phone or e-mail contacts. I'm afraid that we don't have many OZ wreckers in California, but I'd be willing to ship one if this is a decent radio/CD.

Thanks.

PS: Lowtide: If I needed a CB... you're the man!
