Radiator replacement/burst radiator hose (2 Viewers)

The other day, my upper radiator hose burst

and coolant exploded everywhere. I don’t think the cause of this was age because the hoses look relatively new. I’ve had this cruiser for a year and a half.

I recently just did a coolant flush as the prior owner used incorrect coolant and the inside of my cooling system had lots of sediment and gunk. I have attached a picture of what the inside of my radiator looks like as well.

the radiator however looks to be new and not OEM as there is no tags/PN on it, and all the nuts/bolts looks brand new on it. According to the service records I have access to, the thermostat was replaced in 2022 but nothing about the radiator.

I am trying to figure out the culprit of why my hose burst before I buy another hose. Do you guys advise I replace the radiator too?

It takes a LOT of force to burst a hose like that unless there’s a defect in it - that’s what I would suspect first. You could try a new high-quality hose and give it a squeeze with the engine running at high idle. It should be pliable with your fingers as coolant runs through.

The upper hose is the inlet to the radiator, so you have the water pump just to the engine side of that hose, which will build a head of pressure if there were an obstruction in the radiator. This would be my second suspect, especially if you say it was full of sediment. You could try using the remains of the broken hose with PVC fitting to make a garden hose adapter and power-flush the radiator, see if you get more sediment. Disconnect the lower hose first so the wastewater doesn’t go into the engine.

Me, I’d just replace the radiator and hoses with OEM or at least a Denso.

The upper hose looks swollen to me. If not old hose, then possibly overheating system. I would replace hose, replace radiator cap with new OE one and install Scan Gauge to monitor engine temp. Could also get a test kit for blown head gasket.

We rarely see a radiator hose burst in a 2UZ motor, it could be high pressure (a block in the radiator/engine) or simply a hose failure. How was your coolant prior to this, was it consuming coolant? Usually when there’s high pressure it’s the radiator top plastic area cap where that pressure is relieved rather than it reaches all the way to the block.

That hose definitely looks swollen. Hope you caught it in time.

+1 on replacing radiator, t-stat, and hose (and all other hoses), if it were me that is.
