I have a long term plan to fit a water to air intercooler to my troopy.

With the AC condenser already mounted in front of the radiator, there doesn't seem to be much room to fit a water to air intercooler radiator in front of them.

Any ideas on how best to mount it?

I suppose I could try and squeeze it in behind the grill, if I can, but that would require rerouting the AC piping and evaporator, and trimming or removal of the grill/bonnet support piece of bodywork.

Another option I thought of was to remove the engine driven fan, fit thermo fans, and move the exisitng engine radiator and AC condenser back towards the engine with custom brackets, giving more room behind the grill.

Anyone done similar?

Thoughts/opinions?

I'm in a similar situation, I want ot keep my air con too.i am considering putting in in front of the ac pipes, and not having a central grill. Or running it above the motor and running a scoop. I havent checked any clearances yet. Will look at them this weekend when I fit the barrel cooler itself.

Hi Simon,

I think is not good remove the engine driven fan... (reliability)

...i prefer find another location to the radiator (HOOD :hhmm:)

...or remove the A/C :hillbilly:

Hulsty, please keep me updated as to your progress, will be good to see what you come up with.

Lulo, yes, keeping the engine driven fan would be more reliable (you're not going to like my truck when I've finished with it, unreliable Volvo portal axles, thermo fans, etc., will have to see if I can think up other mods you will not like ;) ).

I don't think that removing the AC is an option, it gets pretty hot down here in summer, and I really don't like being soaked in sweat while driving.

I don't think that under the hood is an option, once the intercooler heat exchanger is fitted in the turbo crossover pipe/manifold/etc. on top of the engine.

Plus I would be concerned about heat soak if in the engine bay.

And with 3 batteries under the hood, there really isn't much room left under there.

Might have to see if something will fit in front of the AC condenser, maybe removing the brace under the hood latch, adding extra strength somehow to compensate for removing it, and seeing if there is enough room then.

Any idea what sort of thickness the intercooler radiator would/should be?

Thanks for the responses.

I havent got as far as the radiator yet, but I have finialised the cooler location, i am very pleased with it.

I just got some info from the radiator supplier (PWR). The radiator core they quoted for me is 10'' square and 2'' thick. Adding a fan increases the thickness 2'' again.

Are you looking at using a fan with your setup? I am undecided weather to use a fan or not.

Another thing, is there any great difference between using the "intercooler radiator" and a similarly sized oil cooler?

The intercooler radiator is $263.00 + where as a oil cooler is about half that.

I am not sure weather the engine fan would pull enough air for 3 cores.

I am still looking at cores, an oil cooler core seems to be the go, I have not found anyone saying why I could not use on rather than a small radiator that the intercooler people sell for twice the price.

I used the front intercooler of 960 volvo and move the radiator. The intercooler is between the radiator and the ac condenser...it works great , it looks like a factory set up for a 70 series.

Yes, photos please, if possible.

Did you move the radiator back towards the engine?

Did you do anything about the engine fan, remove it?
