Somehow you lucked out. I don't see how you could have any air if it isn't running hot and/or bubbling out the cap from time to time. I'm having this issue with my pickup after replacing the water pump with a complete drain and refill of the coolant. The swooshing sound was something I assumed was a low coolant level-but the coolant wasn't "low" when checked. Too much air in there.
