I’m not forgetting. What did you think the stove bolt 6 comment was for?

Putting a date on a design is hugely relevant to its effectiveness. Th 2f is a ancient tractor motor. It can’t be made to rev. It can’t make horsepower. It gets terrible mileage and emissions. Comparing a 2f to anything modern in a positive way is just having nasalgic blinders on. It’s old tech. Do you think engine tech hasn’t advanced in 75 years?

A gen 3 motor out of the box is 300 hp, 300k reliable. A 350 would need to be built to get there and would never be anywhere close to as reliable. Gen 3 has been made for 30 years now. There are parts everywhere. Tons of aftermarket. And they can be had used for $300. You can’t build a 350 to make 300 hp for $300. A cam and stock ls3 intake and you’re 400 hp without trying.

I love the 350. I’ve had many. It is what it is. It’s a good engine that is way past it’s sell by date.

I think the point I was trying to make is getting lost. I again agree that a LS engine IS SUPERIOR to the gen 1 small block, my point is the gen 1 small block is still a very reasonable engine upgrade option in a FJ40 for someone looking to get rid of their original or missing motor.

The nostalgia comment is confusing though, because isn't one of the main reason to own a FJ40 rooted in nostalgia? to me this is a big reason to own any 70's 4x4.
That same logic would say that a brand new 4x4 is 'superior' so why do we all gravitate to these old rigs?

I guess it's worth mentioning I don't drive my FJ40 daily. It's more of a weekend toy

I am of the mind that any V8 is a lot of motor for s 40 series. I put them in the 60 series for a living and it is a game changer for a vehicle of that size and weight. If I were to build out the 40 I own, a 69, the Cummins 2.8 would be a big contender, and I am not a big diesel fan. In my mind it is the perfect blend of size and utilitarian for the vehicle.

In regard to cost, I guess it depends on where your 40 falls in the family vehicle pecking order. Doing it for yourself, figure, guessing here, $16-20K if you replace all surrounding systems as well. It is a big Investment. That is what it should be considered. Fact is, Resto-Mod Land Cruisers are selling for bigger money than Restored Land Cruisers. 40s may have leveled off a bit in the market but they are still a valuable asset. Making it more road worthy and safe adds to it's value and reliability and therefore makes it a candidate for more use in your stable, or another's if you sell.

It'll be a while before the 2.8 makes any kind of showing on the used market.

I think a lot of people aren't considering your points here. Considering most of the nickle and dime banter on this forum about the R2.8 swap.

Personally, I love my 40. I've loved 40's since I was old enough to understand what a cool car was, and I plan on driving it until they make manually driven cars illegal (hopefully thats many moons from now, if ever). And I drive *a lot*.

To that end, a small turbodiesel, that will probably get 21 or 22mpg without a lead foot attached, that has a current factory support system... and makes more horsepower and torque in stock configuration, all in significantly lighter and smaller package is a great deal. Even at $16 or $17k.

I could swap the 2f and throw in a 28 gal man-a-fre tank, and continue to drive my 40 as usual... or I could spend the same (or much more) amount of money on a modern car with no soul.

Pinching pennies that you're going to spend anyways is ridiculous when you really think about it.

EDIT: Not to mention, I could rebuild and sell my old 2F and old gas tank, and recoup at least a couple thousand from the swap/upgrade. All in all, I think it's a worthwhile swap.

The Cummins 2.8 is the best , well covered swap for a vehicle like the FJ40. Cummins made the correct choice for the powertrain of the future for what people need. My bet is soon vehicles will be engineered around this engine, as the Dodge Ram was.

You're all wrong!
The 1KD-FTV from the Prado is the best diesel option for the 40 series.
Just throwing it in here for others to consider. Yes it has been done and far superior option to what has been discussed. For what you are quoting for engine only can supply complete components from an Aussie Prado for similar costs.

Those are nearly impossible to get in the U.S.. So for us here, they aren't even an option. Never mind the best option.

And then there's no support market for those engines here either.

Not impossible at all and certainly an option, even for you guys. I in fact have two 1KD conversions on their way to me to be prepped for export to the USA.

What's total cost for the customers, after all is said and done? And are these new motors?

Depending on spec, range from 8-10K AUD plus shipping.
All components sourced from written off vehicles. Everything included from radiator to tail shafts.

I suppose $7500 USD isn't a bad deal for all that.

What about parts for repair?

Service items can be sourced locally. Toyota USA seem to be able to supply a lot of things. Anything out of the ordinary and I have a full parts backup whether it be new used or aftermarket. Can also supply aftermarket upgrades and performance parts. Currently working on ECU re-mapping as well. These 1KD's go like a freight train with a good tune. Not sure what I can and can't advertise on here so PM me if you want more details.

no not yet I have 5 fj40 and this one got moved to the back of the line, about to start back next next week..
