Hi,
Manual swapping my 94 surf with an r151 from another surf. Anyone know what the sensor is beside the reverss light sensor? Haven't see this before. On the front right of the trans.
Cheers

Very odd. I haven't seen that on any of the R transmissions I've had, and it doesn't appear in any of the manuals I have either. Looks almost like the switches on my split transfer case. What does it look like on the back side when you remove it?

Not sure what that switch would engage with on the inside of the transmission, possibly the 1st/2nd or 3rd/4th shift rods? Here is what that side looks like inside:

Yeah it's strange, looks like a push switch position sensor same as the reverse sensor behind it, no idea why the car would need to know what gear it's in other than reverse though. Once I get the shifter arms in I'll check when it's positive and report back

Can you see anything it would engage with through the hole? Curious to know what the hole in the transmission case looks like, it appears from your previous photos that it is threaded into a relatively shallow cast boss in the transmission case. Could it be an aftermarket modification?

I suspected it might a neutral sensor since the truck doesn't have a clutch position sensor (so you can only start in neutral) but that's not the case. Sensor isn't continuous in any gear or neutral, so seems pretty useless idk. Maybe the sensor is aftermarket but I doubt it, and the hole in the tranny is definitely stock. I think sometimes it just has a plug in it. I'm Mystified

Neutral sensor doesn't make sense if it's a manual trans.

My 2000 Prado 95 series Auto has a similar plug at the back of it near the transfer case which is just hanging there with nothing to plug into. Someone once mentioned it was probably for a certain diff function which my diff doesn't have but other cars which host the A343F trans does have. Possibly useless information but I guess it confirms it's possible that it doesn't server a purpose and it's ok to leave taped up or something? 🤔

Yeah I'm gonna leave it, it was plugged in on the parts truck I got it from tho

Any chance you have the frame number for the parts truck it came from? I’d be very curious to look it up and see what that sensor is. None of the R transmissions I’ve had even have a plug or cast boss in that spot.
