quick tire ??? for those that have tried both

Ok, so I know tire questions are like poison but wanted to get a perspective from someone that has actually tried both the Goodyear MT/R and ProComp MT. These are both used sets, more or less in the same condition. The only other issue is that the Goodyears are 305s and the ProComps are 315s. In my current setup I can run 315s with no problems. I use BFG ATs in 285 as "street" tires. These others would be on another set of wheels and would be for trail runs but I am in southern CA so this often entails a casual couple hundred miles to a trail so I am concerned about road manners, noise, etc. to a degree. I've also run plenty of off road tires just neither of these two so if you've got a vote tell me why. Many thanks in advance.

Im running Pro compt MT and i love them. stock siping is pretty awesome. They also last a long time. The only reason i dont run goodyears is because they can not take dirt/mud. From what i hear the mt/r tire doesnt clean well at all and i know for fact that the pro comps will clean out dirt/mud.

BTW- i have not run mt/r so no first hand experience on them

A local club member has run both the Procomps and the MT/R's. He favors the MT/R's slightly, but not by much. That's here in the northeast, mud/rock combination - note these are used as a second set for trail only.

One of my fellow club members has 35" mtr. They will plug up with heavier soils (clay). They're no bogger.

Any input on size? I personally don't think the difference between 305 and 315 will make or break most situations but again, wanted some firsthand personal experience to weigh in with why or why not. Much appreciated.

305 is basically a wide 33" tire, whereas the 315 is a more narrow 35" (almost) tire.
If your lift and gearing is appropriate, go with the 315. It does make a difference on the trail.

You didn't mention if you were going to be doing many ROCK trails. If you are in the Rocks at all, like at Johnson Valley in So Cal go with the GY MTRs. If your just doing light trails either tire would be suitable. If your worried about Mud, you might look at a BFG MT or a Swamper. One of the guys in my group at the Rubicon on Memorial day cut down a sidewall on a ProComp MT on some rocks (good thing for full size spares). They only have 2 ply sidewall where the GY MTR have 4 ply sidewall. Also my brother has been running ProComp Mt's for a while and his tread wear on the street has been brutal, they seemed to wear down quickly. I plan on getting new GY MTRs for both my Cruiser and 4runner when those tires wear out.

Goodyear MT/R are a 3 ply tire in the size he is considering. I look at the Goodyear MT/R as a aggressive allterrin, great road manors, good for a lot of things, good fuel economy over some times, wear long, quite compared to most other tires. IF it is a second set of tires and you are concerned about mud, get a real mud tire. later robbie

You night wanna see if there's any local clubs that you could check with to see what those guys are running.

On second thought... The local guys around here all run skinny stuff so they can, "dig down" . Just seems to get'em stuck.

My 13" wide swampers go around 'em just fine so I can pull them out.
