Hi All,

I hope you all had a nice weekend.
I am just curious as my driveway has a SLIGHT GRADE nothing crazy but as a precaution I use the handbrake almost daily. I could prob get away with not using it but I feel extra comfortable knowing I do.

Will this damage my 200 LC in the long run?

Does it put undue stress on any components? This is my forever car-ha seriously, I will drive for next 20 years..so please give me your thoughts.

Thank you to the group in advance
Eric

I don’t see any long term stress. If anything it’s better than resting all that weight on the park setting of the trans. Seems perfectly normal to use a hand brake to me, all the years I drive manual trans vehicles I never saw any long term issue.

I think he's messing with us, everyone knows Florida is flat as a pancake.

I agree it is better to use the E-Brake regularly than not use it. Keeps all the cables, springs, etc. moving as they should - and reassures you every time you use it that it will work well should you ever really need it.

If you really want to be OCD (like me), then you will push the button on the handle every time you engage/disengage the brake so you do NOT hear the ratcheting when you engage it.

HTH

Thanks for the answers!
Yes Florida is flat as Kansas but my driveway as I said has a slight grade

Thx again everyone, much appreciated
Eric

Use the e-brake regularly. If you put the brake on, then put it in park, you can keep some of that pressure off the parking pawl. It is FAR easier to replace brake shoes than an internal transmission part. I always use my e-brake on every car I own.

If you shut the car off, you enable the hand brake. Every time, every car.

What you're describing is the proper way to park any car. You will not do any undue harm as long as you're not reefing on the break as hard as you can every time you set the parking brake.

Could you please give my wife brake lessons, she won't listen to me. :bang:

Our driveway is on a slight incline as well, and I use my ebrake every time - shift from drive or reverse to neutral, pull the brake until I feel it engage, then shift to park to ensure there is no strain on the parking pawl. This method is especially important when on extreme angles and off road to avoid transmission damage and a potential runaway vehicle. And yes that does happen like last year when a Jeep careened down Black Bear Pass nearly killing the passenger and many others on the trail.
