Good afternoon all - a few weeks back I posted some pics of a FJ45 my mechanic is working on:

It is apparently a '66, all stock, and the owner is trying to swap out the stock engine with a thrown rod and the stock 3 speed for an already sourced 2F with, presumably, H42 4 speed. My mechanic knows I am a Cruiser nut and I offered to "bird dog" some of this info, as he isn't certain what all he needs to obtain to handle the swap.

Few questions - there is NOT a transfer case attached with the 2F/H42; will the existing stock FJ45 transfer case bolt up, or does it need to be mated to a H42 transfer case?

Will there need to be new driveshafts, etc., purchased? Not sure if the existing driveshafts off of the FJ45 will mate up to a later model transfer case, etc.?

The bellhousing on the 2F/H42 has a "3F" stamped on it; is that correct? I've never dropped my FJ60's 2F/H42 so I am not certain what is stamped on the back of it.

Pics of the 2F and presumed H42 below.

Any help that can be offered is much appreciated

You've got a late (post '85) 2F/4-speed by the bellhousing, while it will "work" it will tilt your transmission over 5 degrees and doesn't have a provision for supporting the rear. If you go that route you will need to use all the clutch components from that year and fab a cross member to support the transmission across the frame. The original case will bolt up and you're driveshafts should work (unless its the really late H42 with the 5-speed spacer, then you will need to lengthen the front & shorten the rear). Another option is using your original bellhousing and clutch components, it will have tabs for transmission mounts and won't tilt the driveline.

Good luck!

Easiest with an earlier bellhousing with the ears on the side. On your tcase question. Ur 45 came with 10 spline tcase. The late stuff is 19. Middle is 16. 4 speeds were 16 and 19.

Sent from my phone using IH8MUD

either way they go, it would be easier to move the throw out fork to the driver side of the bellhousing.

I don't think the transfer case will bolt up.

That looks like a late 2f from a 60 series, as Tucker said. 19 spline output shaft on the trans. It will need a split case. The 75-80 four speed has a 16 spline output shaft. Your transfer case is a 10 spline case. The split case is a better transfer case, but it will require a crossmember, driveshaft flange adapters and shift linkage fabrication.

A 16 spline 4speed will bolt up to that bell housing, or a four speed and bell housing will bolt up to that motor and have mounts. You will still need flange adapters.

Thank you folks - should he try to source a 4 speed (H41?) from a late 40 series rather than use the presumed H42? Will he then also need a H41 matching transfer case?

Obviously this is something I've never done before, but want to help a fellow cruiser head get his 45 back on the road!

Was it mention that the spacer from the back of the transmission is missing. You will need that to bolt up the split transfer case.

Thanks for catching that - looks like the owner will need to dig up the tranny spacer and the matching transfer case?

Will the 2F mate up to the cooling system/radiator OK?

Will he need to fabricate motor mounts as well as the necessary tranny cross members?

the motor mounts will work as will the radiator and hoses. you'll need to get hoses for a later fj40, call it a 78.

as for the transmission and t-case setup........i would ditch that transmission and bell housing. the trans looks like it's missing some parts ( rear spacer, beraing, sleeve, ..... 0 and it's been exposed to moisture. so i bet there's rust in the gear set and bearling. boat anchor!
i'd try to find either a 40 series h42/h42 with the 4spd t-case or a combo from an fj60 with the split case. realistically, the split cases are much stronger and quieter and a better unit imho.
i have a complete combo here if you guys need it.
i would also run a cast iron 4spd bell housing from a 40 series so you can retain the oem rear engine mounts/brackets. i might have one of these for you as well. the flywheel and clutch assy you have on the 2f will work pefect.

thanks for the pm!
